Anglo-Scottish U16 Team Tournament: Round Up

The Anglo-Scottish U16 Team Tournament is an inter-county team event by invitation only and features 6 counties from England and Scotland. Teams play 3 matches on Saturday and two each on Sunday.

A joint “Clyde” team from West of Scotland and Glasgow & North Strathclyde groups won the Anglo Scottish Under 16 Team Competition over the weekend.

The 2023 competition was played at Tyneside Badminton  Centre, in Newcastle, with ‘county’ teams from Cumbria, Durham, Lothian, Northumberland and Yorkshire.

Each team is made up of six boys and six girls, playing three matches in each of the badminton disciplines. The format is exciting, often too exciting for those watching with many close games.

Having beaten Yorkshire comfortably on Saturday the deciding match was with Lothian. After building a 6-0 lead in hard-fought boys’ singles and the mixed, we unfortunately lost all girl’s singles and two of the boy’s doubles, a 7-5 lead… would this be enough? It was, with a single girls’ doubles win to win overall 8-7!

Team badminton is great fun and we saw some great performances from all the players and great support from their parents.

Congratulations to Ciaran, Esther, Kieran, Layla, Lucas, Max, Pranavi, Rory, Ryan, Shreya, Swara and Valentina.

Thanks to all the parents for supporting the team and to Angus Meldrum who as well as driving his siblings down volunteered to coach the breaks over the weekend which the young players really enjoyed.
