Ruby's 'Ben' Bhraggie Challenge

Donation protected
On 15th September 2020, after CT and MRI scans, biopsies and blood tests the parents of young Ben Hickman (12yrs) were given the devastating news that Ben had a large cancerous Sarcoma tumour, which needed to be reduced in size before attempting an operation to remove the tumour.

The diagnosis has turned the Hickman’s entire world upside down.  Their priority is now the care of Ben and helping him through the various stages of treatment.  This will put an enormous amount of strain and stress on the family but with support they will get the strength to meet the challenges of each day.

In the small rural community of the Seaboard the people want to help and the best way to do that is through the Paediatic Cancer fundraising platform of ‘Gofundme’.

Ben has started his treatment in Aberdeen Children’s hospital and this means he will have to undertake 9 chemotherapy sessions, 2 weeks apart taking him into January 2021.  Currently the family are staying in parent accommodation at the hospital while Ben undergoes his treatment which involves the chemotherapy followed by daily injections between chemo.   In the light of what is happening with Covid-19 and restrictions the family are going to try and rent an apartment / flat in Aberdeen near to the Hospital making a home from home for Ben while he undergoes his chemotherapy.  Thereafter Ben will be transferred to Glasgow Children’s Hospital where he will have an operation to remove the tumour, start radiotherapy and continue with chemotherapy, all of this will take Ben into March / April 2021.

There is no doubt that this will be costly and that is where we as family, friends and even people who do not know the family personally but know through personal experience what the family are going through are able to help by donating on the ‘Gofundme’ Ben page.

Ben’s granny Ruby Hickman is going to lead on a separate endeavour to help Ben called Ruby’s ‘Ben’ Bhraggie Challenge.  Benn Bhraggie is a hill outside Golspie and this was chosen because of its name,  Benn obviously for Ben and then Bhraggie because of its meaning (rough and unsmooth), this could not be a more fitting play on words,  as it expresses just what lies ahead for young Ben and his family as his cancer journey begins.

The climb will be tough but I am assured from google that it is “ well rewarded by excellent views over coastline and inland hills” – However for Ruby the reward will be knowing that any funds raised will be helping Ben as he faces his own Benn Bhraggie.   Ruby who is in her 70’s (dare not tell exactly how old a lady is) will climb every 1,302ft of the Benn for her grandson and hopes to raise £1,302 for her efforts.  Donation sheets in the community will be made available and if anyone would rather give the donation on the ‘Gofundme’ page then that would be great.

The family are now only too aware of the need to support Children’s Cancer Charities and any surplus funds will be donated directly there for the ongoing work.
