How to Handle a Kitchen Sponge That Smells

There is nothing more disgusting than a smelly mushroom. It turns out that the smell is a warning sign: the kitchen sponge is probably the dirtiest object in the entire house.

According to Dr. Philip Tierno, clinical professor in the departments of microbiology and pathology at Langone University in New York and author of The Secret Life of Germs.

This means that if you only use a kitchen sponge to clean your dishes, they may end up rougher than when you started.

Tierno told the Huffington Post, “Soap and water don’t kill bacteria; they just remove them.” “But if you have a dirty sponge to begin with, you have a nice layer of bacteria to cover your plate.”

While fungi are always a breeding ground for bacteria, there are ways to keep them as clean as possible.

Clean the sponge every day.

It’s true. Disinfect that baby every day. Bleach is the best option, but heating a damp sponge in the microwave for about a minute will also work.

Keep it dry.

Drain well after each use and store in a dry place. Stop bacterial growth!

Replace it frequently.

Don’t be a hero. Once a fungus reaches its limit, there is no turning back. Results from a 2017 study suggest we should replace our kitchen sponges every week.

Use it only for washing dishes.

Never use it to dry meat juices. This simply means that it is a foodborne illness. When cleaning countertops, also use kitchen towels or paper towels.

Simply switch to a dish brush.

I know this is hard to hear. But mushrooms are just gross, guys. You’ll still need to clean your toothbrush regularly, but it will dry out much faster, giving bacteria less time to multiply.
