Le sigh.... Yes, I'm going to talk about AI. But I have a question that I would *really* like to know the answer to: >> What do you consider a reasonable use of AI? << We would all like to use AI to make our work more efficient, error-free, and productive, but have you ever considered being the end user? What kind of AI products do you trust? We've all read those garbled newsletters that are a copy + paste, directly from ChatGPT but that is just the tip of the iceberg. 📀 What if AI detects a student's use of an AI grammar checker and expels them from school? 📀 What if AI designs your entire brand identity but then looks like 1,000 other companies? 📀 What is the difference between Van Gogh's "Starry Night" and an image of a night sky created by AI in the same style? AI has been a part of my life and work for years. It was never an "if" but a "when," and it isn't any more magical to me than wi-fi on an airplane or trees using mycorrhizal fungi to communicate. But it is now all around us. There isn't a single type of creative or content-generating software that doesn't ask, "Would you like to improve this with AI?" the second you start writing, designing, or coding. It's everywhere, but is it something you want to buy or consume as a user? Where does efficiency + automation end and authenticity + creativity begin? As creatives, what do we need to disclose? Note: The image below was created using ChatGPT-4 + Dall-E. I asked it to design a brand heavily influenced by Starry Night (which is in the public domain). I didn't use LinkedIn's "Rewrite with AI," but I did use Grammarly to remind me where to put commas. :) Check out the first comment to read the rest of the brand outline.

Who else has felt FOMO about AI? I mean .... With all the "A designer using AI will take over your job" posts out here, it's tough not to feel that way. Especially because while working the day job, trying to level up and grow as a designer, put out content and still show up in your life for the people you care about... ... On top of all that, you have to learn AI? Okay, scary headline aside... Yes, you have to because... ... AI today is a lot like the early days of personal computing and we all know how that turned out. It changed the world and you either adapted or got left behind. Take 3 foundational courses on AI. I say 3 because any more and it's possible you might be using it as a crutch or an excuse to procrastinate trying to build or design with AI. When it comes to pricing, Stable Diffusion uses a credit system, but DreamStudio allows you to experience a fully-featured free trial. DALL·E 3 charges $20/month as part of ChatGPT Plus. For commercial use, both models are currently permitted but the implications are yet to be explored fully.
