'I just wanted Student of The Year series to be Reema Maya's voice'
Reema Maya, acclaimed for her short film Nocturnal Burger (2023), which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival last year, is set to direct the digital adaptation of Student of The Year.
Karan Johar discussed his collaborations with emerging directors and writers during the closing session of the Cinevesture International Film Festival (CIFF) in Chandigarh, where he shared details about the upcoming series.
Johar said, "Reema Maya will be directing the digital version of Student of The Year. But it will be her way and definitely not mine because if I'll enter Reema Maya's world then I will make it more of an illusion which her name means." He elaborated,"I just wanted it to be her voice. She made it her own series."
'I'm a big fan of what Shazia Iqbal did with Bebaak'
Praising Shazia Iqbal, who is directing a love story for Dharma Productions, set to release this year, he said, "Shazia has also directed a film for us that is releasing this year. We have not titled it yet. It is with Sidhant Chaturvedi and Tripti Dimri. It's a love story and it's a full-fledged theatrical feature which should come out this year."
He continued,"I'm a big fan of what Shazia did with Bebaak. I loved it. Somen (Somen Mishra) had asked me to see that, and I told him let's call her. I told him that she should make this love story that we were making, which is very-very layered. We needed a very strong voice that would understand that. I just absolutely loved her work in our five minutes of interaction."
