Stephen stares out the round window of the twin engine airplane and watches his beloved jungle-covered mountains disappear forever. Life as he knew it will never be the same. In the middle of his 9th grade year, Stephen and his missionary family are forced to abruptly leave their island home and head back to the United States. Stephen is suddenly plopped down in the podunk town of Penningtonville in snowy, Pennsylvania; the last place on earth he wants to be.Stephen now faces the daunting challenge of being the “new kid” and trying to fit in at a brand-new school in a small town where no one has ever heard of Papua New Guinea, and he is viewed as an oddity. This is no simple task and leads to plenty of confusion, humorous conversations and cultural misunderstandings. Along the way, Stephen stumbles upon an unexpected friendship, his first true romance and a bully determined to make his life miserable. Relying on his faith and family, Stephen boldly faces the challenges in front of him as he navigates the complexities of his new life and grieves the loss of his old one. Stephen’s journey is a tribute to third culture kids and global nomads around the world who know the pain of being uprooted and the struggle of making a new place feel like home.

This book follows the journey of Stephen, a third-culture kid, as his family moves back to the USA after many years of living in Papua New Guinea as missionaries. The author, Simeon, cares deeply that kids see their story represented in media, and The Long Flight Home does just that by giving a glimpse into the tangled emotions of a third-culture/missionary kid.

I definitely recommend this book for any young adults, and I also think this is an excellent book for families of returned missionaries.

This book kept my attention as an adult but I would have loved it as a teen. I think I would have found it encouraging as I tried to maneuver through those tricky years of development. Despite it's focus on missionary kids the themes are universal as the main character explores friendship, dating, peer pressures, the ups and downs of being an athlete and family dynamics. Bonus -- I like the eye catching cover art!

As one who experienced many of the author’s stories firsthand, I was drawn into the authentic ways he wove his narrative. Since my own move from PNG, continually find myself in conversation with MKs and TCKs who share Stephen’s story in many ways. I now have a book I’d happily give them to assist them on their own journey of self discovery.
It is well written with relatable characters that are filled with grace and hope.

I had the privilege of reading it in it's beta stage and highly recommend it. It captures and articulates well the challenges many missionary kids and third culture kids experience in transition. It would be a great read for students in transition but would also be an insightful read for other teens and adults who come alongside them in transition in their church or classroom or parents looking for ways to generate conversation with their kids in transition.
