Spring 2023 Decolonizing Sustainability Speaker Series
This speaker series will highlight and unpack intersections of settler colonialism, white supremacy, and systems of power/privilege/oppression within the discourse and rhetoric of contemporary sustainability, environmental, and climate change movements. This semester, our theme is Carceral Conservation -- articulated by Dr. Laurel Mei-Singh, carceral conservation describes “the territorial compromise between grassroots efforts for environmental self-determination and state imperatives to control land and natural resources” (2016, 696). This speaker series will help us think through the tensions that exist between both historical and contemporary environmentalism and Indigenous peoples.
