In previous post [https://lnkd.in/e_7gryEA], we learned about ๐๐๐๐ฉ ๐๐ช๐ข๐ฅ๐จ and their basic operating principle In this post, I will dive into the technical details of Heat Pumps and proper system sizing. I will work backward from monthly natural gas bills, so you don't need to be a mechanical engineer or HVAC technician to follow this basic math. For this analysis, I am using the For homeowners with existing natural gas furnace, you can follow along with your own numbers. Otherwise, and if you have no previous data, you can follow these rule of thumbs based on your home square footage ๐๐ก Where ๐ is a scaling factor based on your ๐๐๐๐๐ย average Temperature LO's. โ It's important to understand proper system sizing. Otherwise, you may end up with an oversized system which costs more, or undersized system that runs 24/7, wastes money and can't keep your home warm ๐ด๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ 1. Tabulate your Natural Gas monthly consumption, I used publicly available OEB Bill Calculator [2] 2. Convert Energy content to ๐๐, Column "C" 3. Convert Energy content to Compute ๐๐ฎ๐ถ๐น๐ ๐๐๐๐ตย based on ๐ญ๐ฎ ๐ต๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ย run-time, Column "E" ๐ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ญ๐บ ๐๐ต๐ถ๐ฉ = (๐๐๐๐ต๐ถ ๐น 10^6) รท (30 ๐ฅ๐ข๐บ๐ด) รท (12๐ฉ๐ฐ๐ถ๐ณ๐ด)ย ๐ฝ๐ฉ๐ช๐: reads British Thermal Units per hour This rating tells you how much ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ can be extracted in one hour of run-time 5. Size your heat pump with maximum computed tons For example, January has a maximum gas consumption of ๐ฐ๐ญ๐ต๐บยณ Assuming a run-time of 12hours a day, your heat pump system rating must be at a minimum 41,085๐ฝ๐ฉ๐ช๐ = 41.1๐ ๐ฝ๐ฉ๐ช๐ =3.42๐๐ค๐ฃ๐จ ๐ A Heat Pump size of ๐ฏ.๐ฒ ๐ง๐ผ๐ป๐ย is chosen. There you have it, now you know how to size your Heat Pump system. Easy-peasy! In my next post, I will walk you through the ๐๐ข๐๐๐๐๐ , ๐๐๐๐๐ฆ๐ ๐๐ and ๐ช๐ฏ๐ด๐ช๐จ๐ฉ๐ตย from this post, the implications of sub-Zero temperatures and how to read the table/charts below ๐ --- Related posts [1]๐๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ ๐ฃ๐๐บ๐ฝ: ๐๐ป ๐๐ฎ๐๐บ๐ฒ๐ป ๐ง๐ฒ๐ฟ๐บ๐ ๐https://lnkd.in/e_7gryEA [2] ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐ฏ๐ผ๐ป ๐ง๐ฎ๐ : ๐ง๐ต๐ฒ ๐ฅ๐ผ๐ฎ๐ฑ ๐ง๐ผ ๐๐๐ฝ๐ฒ๐ฟ ๐๐ป๐ณ๐น๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป ๐https://lnkd.in/exjsjHrK Joseph Fournier Tom Kirkman Mark Turnbull, MPM, MEng Renate Siekmann ๐จ๐ฆ ๐บ๐ธ PMP, P.Eng, Greenbelt โก๏ธAdam
Easier to just use natural gas to heat.
Most Canadians would have to multiple heating sources for the winter. Make the weather tax big enough and the opex avoidance might justify doing so, but only act to drive new home prices even further for first time home buyers.

Appreciate your contribution!

2moBased on your zone why would you put a heat pump in when efficiency at low temp is so poor and when it does get hot and you short cycle the units will kill itself in less than 2 years
