I will work backward from monthly natural gas bills, so you don't need to be a mechanical engineer or HVAC technician to follow this basic math. For this analysis, I am using the ๐—Ÿ๐—ฌ๐—ก๐—ซโ„ข ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿด ๐˜๐˜ฏ๐˜ท๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ๐˜ต๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ ๐˜ˆ๐˜ช๐˜ณ ๐˜๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ต ๐˜—๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฑ, model# ๐Ÿฐ๐—›๐—ฃ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿด๐—ฉ๐Ÿฏ๐Ÿฒ๐—ฃ [1] ๐‘ฏ๐’†๐’‚๐’• ๐‘ท๐’–๐’Ž๐’‘ ๐‘บ๐’š๐’”๐’•๐’†๐’Ž ๐‘บ๐’Š๐’›๐’Š๐’๐’ˆ For homeowners with existing natural gas furnace, you can follow along with your own numbers. Otherwise, and if you have no previous data, you can follow these rule of thumbs based on your home square footage ๐‘“๐‘ก Where ๐‘˜ is a scaling factor based on your ๐’๐’๐’„๐’‚๐’ย average Temperature LO's. โš  It's important to understand proper system sizing. Otherwise, you may end up with an oversized system which costs more, or undersized system that runs 24/7, wastes money and can't keep your home warm ๐‘ด๐’†๐’•๐’‰๐’๐’…๐’๐’๐’๐’ˆ๐’š 1. Tabulate your Natural Gas monthly consumption, I used publicly available OEB Bill Calculator [2] 2. Convert Energy content to ๐—š๐—, Column "C" 3. Convert Energy content to (British Thermal Units) 4. Size your heat pump with maximum computed tons For example, January has a maximum gas consumption of ๐Ÿฐ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿต๐—บยณ Assuming a run-time of 12hours a day, your heat pump system rating must be at a minimum 41,085๐˜ฝ๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ = 41.1๐™ ๐˜ฝ๐™ฉ๐™ช๐™ =3.42๐™๐™ค๐™ฃ๐™จ ๐Ÿ‘‰ A Heat Pump size of ๐Ÿฏ.๐Ÿฒ ๐—ง๐—ผ๐—ป๐˜€ย is chosen. There you have it, now you know how to size your Heat Pump system. Easy-peasy! Based on your zone why would you put a heat pump in when efficiency at low temp is so poor and when it does get hot and you short cycle the units will kill itself in less than 2 years

Easier to just use natural gas to heat.

Most Canadians would have to multiple heating sources for the winter. Make the weather tax big enough and the opex avoidance might justify doing so, but only act to drive new home prices even further for first time home buyers.
