Launch of “Priya and the Twirling Wind” and panel discussion

Greetings from U.S. Embassy India!

Please join us for the launch of “Priya and the Twirling Wind” comic book and film, followed by a panel discussion and high tea on May 19, 2022, at 5:00 p.m. IST at the American Center, 24, K.G. Marg, New Delhi.

About “Priya and the Twirling Wind”

Priya, India’s first female superhero, has to protect her enchanted forest from greedy industrialists threatening to cut down all the trees.  With the help of a little girl named Somya and the local villagers, they defend their home — reminiscent of India’s Chipko movement.  Priya shows Somya, who is suffering from asthma due to the toxic haze, the beauty of her forest and its power to heal Mother Earth and her.

The short film brings Somya’s story to life through the magic of puppets and animation by renowned puppeteer Raven Kaliana, and the voices of Shubhra Prakash, Dipti Mehta, Amaya Joshi, and Vick Krishna.  Scan the pages with the augmented reality app to see fun animation, AR puppets, stories, and interviews.  The project was funded through a grant from the U.S. Embassy New Delhi.

Speakers:

Ram Devineni, creator of the interactive social-activist comic book series, “Priya’s Shakti.”  Priya is India’s first comic book superhero and has appeared in numerous comics focused gender-based violence, covid-19 pandemic, and on climate change.

Shubhra Prakash, writer for “Priya and the Twirling Wind” as well as “Priya’s Mask” and “Priya and the Swarm.”  The playwright has also co-written, produced, and acted in an original play, “The Music In My Blood,” about Indian classical music.

Dr. Vandana Shiva, scholar, environmental activist, ecofeminist, and founder of Navdanya.

Ridhima Pandey, youth climate activist and TEDx speaker.
