Helen Dean CBE, CEO of Nest Pensions, is one of the architects of auto enrolment and responsible for bringing 9 million UK workers into pension saving. During her time at DWP Helen was tasked with coming up with a solution to the UK’s chronic under-saving in pensions. Her degree in psychology led Helen to behavioural economics. Finding compulsion too extreme, Helen and her team started to explore nudge theory. Fast forward and having designed and built the policy that would change the face of pension saving in the UK, Helen moved to PADA, Nest’s predecessor. Here she moved from policy to delivery. Helen and the PADA team were faced with a blank piece of paper and a big challenge – to build a low-cost, high-quality pension scheme from scratch.

In the last 8 years Helen has led the product, marketing and operations arms of Nest, before her appointment as CEO in September 2016. Since then, Helen has been at the helm of one of the largest pension schemes in the UK. Using her position to support women in pensions, Helen is a mentor to female pensions and non-pensions professionals, offering guidance and coaching. Helen has signed the Women in Finance Charter on behalf of Nest, overseen the creation of Nest’s first diversity group and published Nest’s gender pay report despite not being required to. Helen is committed to bringing more diversity to Nest’s senior team and is working with her board to establish a senior leadership programme to cultivate the next generation of diverse leaders for Nest.

My vision for Guernsey Community Savings was to eliminate financial exclusion as far as possible in Guernsey. This has involved two streams of work. Firstly, our friendly and expert staff help our clients access an account provided by VFX Financial, a money transmission business. We introduce clients to VFX while helping them to meet identification requirements. GCS is not a regulated financial services business, and this means we can reduce financial exclusion while avoiding the cost and complexity that applies to banks and other regulated firms. Secondly, and of growing importance, is the provision of money management advice. The ability to manage money is essential both for the individual and for the economy in general. GCS is spending more and more time providing this service, not only directly to our clients, but also to third parties.

The States of Guernsey has introduced the Secondary Pensions regulations to help islanders save for their retirement and reduce pensioner poverty.

What are Secondary Pensions?

Secondary Pensions is new legislation that requires employers to provide a pension scheme for their employees. Ten years ago, the UK introduced auto-enrolment, and its has proven to be very successful in helping employees save for retirement.

Secondary Pensions brings similar requirements locally with a legal requirement for employers to enrol relevant employees into a suitable pension. It is anticipated that this will significantly increase the percentage of the working population saving for their retirement, by ensuring that employees are automatically enrolled into a pension scheme.

Your Island Pension (YIP)

To help employers and to ensure that all employers can comply with the new requirements, the States of Guernsey has facilitated the creation of Your Island Pension (YIP) which is a simple, compliant and affordable pension scheme that helps islanders save for their retirement goals.
