Modding Mafia 1 music uses the same method as modding Left 4 Dead 2

If you want to mod the Mafia 1 music, you must have this folder in your directory:

Steam < steamapps < common < Mafia < Mafia < sounds < MUSIC

You may notice that there's not a Music folder in the game's sound directory. Create a new folder, and rename it to MUSIC.

I'm not sure if it accepts lowercase or capitals in the folder name, but make it uppercase to be sure since that's how it currently works in-game.

In this example picture, your custom music must have the same name as the original.

For this example, we'll use the Time Crisis 1's title screen music to replace it.

  1. The original music files for Mafia 1 are .ogg, so you can drag and drop it into Audacity.

2. Drag and drop your custom music into Audacity. It should automatically place your song below the original one. Mute the original one by clicking the "Mute" button underneath its title.

3. Trim your custom song to match the original song's length. It must be the same length, just as Valve's music system for Left 4 Dead 2 works. If you've done that already, proceed to Step 4.

4. Export your new title screen music by choosing: File < Export < Export as .OGG

5. Name your custom song to match the title of the original one.

The original song name is 01 - Main Theme.

When you name your file, change it to that same name.

Voila, you saved your custom music in the original game's sound directory as an .ogg file.

To check if it really worked in game, open Mafia. After the screen loads, you should be able to hear it playing within the first few minutes. If you don't hear it, go back through the steps to see if you missed something.

The next tutorial will cover packing the file, and unpacking the file to place your custom sounds (or install someone else's).
