New ASC Division
We need to reconsider the mission of our association, especially in the case of becoming an ASC division. As the task force already noted, we may appear as a region/race/ethnicity-based division instead of a subfield. What does "Chinese" mean? Is it only region, race/ethnicity, or topics? Our mission is also inclusive of immigration and international studies. Yet, the title itself may exclude many scholars from joining.

Additional cons: life time members won't be recognized. A separate journal may need to be created and maintained, resulting in competition with Asian Criminological Society. Lose the close knit group. More control by ASC. Financial control by ASC. Larger overhead. More difficult to afford by student members. I strongly oppose.

I am already a member of ASC and will be ASC members in the forseeable future. The biggest concern for me is that we will lose members from mainland China, including Hongkong and Macao. Our membership fee is really small compared with ASC membership fee. I also don't see how ASC can help promote ACCCJ.

In addition to the cons listed (which I fully agree with), I am also concerned about the sustainability of the division regarding future members etc. Conducting criminological research in China is facing sharply increasing difficulties due to geopolitical tensions. It makes it harder to get things done as a division of ASC, and it is uncertain how future scholars will be able to study China, whether the division can successfully recruit Chinese students, etc. Plus, there is no precedent of country-specific division in ASC yet, and the prospect of the Chinese division is unclear with regard to ASC politics. I am concerned that the division will lead to the marginalization of Chinese scholars in Divisions of Intl Criminology, of Peoples of Color and crimes, etc.

Not sure whether we can continue to organize the ACCCJ delegation as we have done. Not sure we can continue to organize the ACCCJ online conference as we did before. Not sure whether our life membership will continue to be valid after joining ASC. Overall, not sure whether we can do whatever we want under our consitution/bylaws.

The ACCCJ might work well to attract researchers from the greater China, including mainland China, Taiwan, Hongkong, and Macau. As noted in the cons, we are not sure about the relationship between the poentially newly-created ASC division and ACCCJ. If the growth of the new ASC division weakens rather than strengthens the ACCCJ, then we may see a loss of participants/members from the areas of the greater China. It might be difficult to handle the relationship between these the ASC division and the ACCCJ. As far as I know, currently the ASC has a Experimental Criminology Division (DEC), and outside of that, there is a Academy of Experimental Criminology (AEC). I believe AEC was established earlier. Not sure how these two institutions work -- have they seen a growth of AEC after the establishment of DEC? More info about the operation and relationship between these two institutions may be useful for us to make related decisions.

It may work if the International Criminology and the Chinese Criminology can combine, because of the common dimenstion of regional and global studies. Such a combination can also promote non-western criminology, because the traditional emphasis on western societies.
