4.5 twisty, mysterious stars for this compelling debut!

Did I sit and read this in a single sitting? Yes. My only regret is that it ended so quickly!

I attended a talk by the author where she mentioned she loves putting cliffhangers at the end of chapters, and that was evident throughout and kept me turning the pages. Penner weaves an impressive tale that connects the three narrative perspectives and the use of the dual timelines to reveal the details of the lost apothecary kept things interesting.

Caroline starts out things out as bit of a droll character who has spent her adult life chasing what shes’s supposed to, but I think she gets her act together by the end of the book. I liked where her storyline went even if I didn’t connect with her personally.

I wish we’d had a little more time amongst the apothecary and her work, as we get to the main conflict of the story pretty quickly, but the fast pace of the book is part of why it’s great. There’s a bit of a quick wrap up to some of the minor plot points at the end, but the main storyline is well fleshed out.

Included at the end are some really fun resources including recipes and additional research on historical poisons. I look forward to seeing what Penner does next!
