A policeman playing chess with an inmate goes viral online and garnered various reactions from the internet users.

PCpl Arman Louie Buban, a police officer from Magallanes Municipality, recently shared a photo of himself playing chess with a detainee, accompanied by a powerful statement: “No walls can separate us from being a chess player.”

As the president of the local chess club, he expressed his desire to promote the game of chess for everyone, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Buban believes that chess is a universal game that transcends social barriers. It doesn’t matter if someone is rich or poor, employed or unemployed, young or old—when it comes to the chessboard, everyone is equal.

“As a president of chess club in the Municipality of Magallanes, gusto ko na makilala ang larong chess para sa lahat, mayaman man o mahirap, may trabaho o wala, bata man o matanda, pantay-pantay yan pagdating sa board, chess is for everyone ika nga,” Buban said.

He passionately advocates for chess to be accessible to all, highlighting its ability to bridge gaps and foster connections among people from different walks of life.

Whenever there is a detainee at the police station, Buban always makes it a point to inquire if anyone knows how to play chess. It was during one of these occasions that he discovered the hidden talent of a detainee, who happened to be a skilled chess player in the game of checkers (dama).

Buban, feeling slightly challenged, decided to play against him, relying on his own practice and experience in chess.

“Everytime may detainee kami sa station I always ask kung may marunong ba maglaro ng chess and ayun si tatay (dama and chess player pala) napasubo ako buti nalang medyo praktisado,” he added.

During their games, the detainee even jokingly told Buban that if he managed to defeat him, he should set him free.
