Every Time My Heart Breaks Kindle Edition
After his family friend, Chloe Ryan, is traumatized by a disturbed ex-boyfriend, Luke Hamilton is "encouraged" to step up and be the kind of partner she needs. Problem is, he's never been in love before. He's not one to give up on much of anything, though. His stubborn, competitive nature, mixed with the dutiful loyalty he inherited from his parents, makes it impossible for him to say no. And romancing Chloe becomes priority number one.
But his feisty contender gives him the challenge of a lifetime when she'd rather argue with him than accept a simple compliment. Chloe demands honest, genuine feelings from someone before she'll even think about opening her heart again, and since Luke refuses to back down from his determined quest, he decides to grow some feelings.
Except, uh, yeah? That's easier said than done since he has no idea how to even begin the process of falling.
---
Chloe is a simple woman with simple wants. All she'd like is to work her job, find a partner to share her life with, and then grow a family with him.
But apparently, that's just too much to ask for. After her ex kidnaps and terrorizes her, Chloe is suddenly put on six weeks of leave from her job to recover, she can't handle it when anyone touches her to even consider dating again, and her big dream of the simple life seems more impossible to reach than ever.
Until Luke bulldozes his way into the picture, determined to help her through her rough patch and promising her everything she's ever wanted.
The problem is Chloe loved Luke way back when she was young, and no one's ever broken her heart the way he did when he didn't even notice her in return. No way is she going to risk more heartbreak at his hands now. And so Chloe becomes just as determined to push him away as he is to stick by her side.
Let the battle of wills begin.

It works fine as a standalome.
There's a super sweet meet cute kinda setup that establishes the mmc personality, which helps thru the rest.
I enjoyed this book a lot, although I'm never a fan of trauma situations and will often dnf based on first indications of that... but it didn't extensively detail.
Why 4 stars and not 5?
there's a tragedy at the end on the book which imho was a hook to gear you up for another in the series and, tragedy.
Spoils the feel good happily ever after.
Chloe and Luke have a connection that runs deeper than their families being thinker than thieves. And even though Chloe is willing to admit to having a crush on Luke when they were growing up, Luke takes a little longer to pick up on things. And maybe needs a little help along the way. But when Chloe goes through a traumatic event and Luke is there for her like no one else, the two of them find themselves closer than ever. But it also has Chloe worrying that it’s the event that brought her and Luke together and not their actual feelings.
Chloe is such a strong character and she uses her sarcasm and quick wit as a defense mechanism. Something I find myself relating to! And Luke does his best to be a gentleman but something about Chloe always brings out his own snarky side. But reading about these two trading barbs and snark was just as romantic as the most romantic novel. The way their families interfered was definitely more on the cute and endearing side than the annoying side, which I have unfortunately found with some books that had the interfering family trope. This one though, had me loving each and every family member and their relationship with Chloe and Luke.
This one is definitely going to be on my shelf for a long time to come as it’s one I’m going to be reading again and again. This is the first novel by Linda Kage but after what this book put me through, it’s absolutely not going to be the last. I can’t wait to read whatever she comes out with next! I certainly recommend this one and can’t wait until people in my reader groups get to get ahold of this one so we can talk about it together.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
