These 15 women fly outside the lines.

Soar beside Black Hawk helicopter pilot turned politician Tammy Duckworth, hot air balloonist Edgora McEwan, or medevac pilot Dede Murawsky. Higher up, meet commercial and military aviators such as the Coast Guard’s Ronaqua Russell, the first African American female to receive the prestigious Air Medal for her rescue efforts during Hurricane Harvey.

Next, ride along with Tammie Jo Shults, whose story includes a harrowing catastrophic engine failure while in command of 148 people aboard Southwest’s Flight 1380. Others share their experiences in military high-performance jets, the Stratotanker, or while flying for the Blue Angels.

Reaching past the bounds of Earth are astronauts who have launched in the cramped Russian rocket, the
Soyuz, orbited Earth while conducting critical science experiments, or lived aboard the International Space Station.

In all cases, the women in this book faced obstacles. Throughout their rise to incredible accomplishment, these courageous go-getters persevered and endured,
insisting on success. Ultimately, each succeeded on her path to flight.

These diverse high-flyers are dreamers and doers who believed, despite the odds, that soaring is possible.

When I first sat down to read this book, I only intended to read a chapter or two before going to bed. Instead, I ended up reading nine! I loved reading these inspiring stories of women who relentlessly pursued their dreams despite many struggles and setbacks. I also enjoyed the sidebars that included additional information and fascinating facts. Did you know a regular airstrip is 2,300 feet and the deck of an aircraft carrier is only 500? I didn’t! If you are looking for an empowering book full of real-life stories, this is a must-read!

This is a lovely and informative collection about women who fly in the sky and into space. These are real people who are rightfully proud of their accomplishments. This book will encourage girls to follow through with their dreams and forge their own path in the world. The author provides helpful sidebars and contacts for more learning opportunities. It is a good idea for boys and men to also read about these successful people, from a senator, to pilots, and astronauts. CAPSaucier

High Flyers 15 Inspiring Women Aviators and Astronauts

Women in the military, woman pilots, women astronauts. These energetic, moving and heart-stopping, biographies of 15 women who took to the air and outer space pull you into the difficult moments these women face, and ultimately over come. Staats offers a portrait of each woman, from childhood on, showing their foibles as well as their strengths. And while all are hard workers and determined in their goals. Staats' also makes them human, by showing their personal touches, including such things as Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti watchig old episodes of Battle Star Galactica while working out on treadmill on the International Space Station. This is a book that can be read chapter-by-chapter or in bigger chunks. Either way, the personal touches and the breezy tone will keep the heroic women in your head as both interesting figures and role models for future generations. Reviewed from an early release.

“High Flyers: 15 Inspiring Female Aviators, Aeronauts, and Astronauts,” by Ann McCallum Staats, left this reader with a feeling of amazement and delight.
Each chapter tells of the unfailing discipline, education, intense training and physical fitness required of the women whose stories unfold in 15 easy-to-read narrative accounts.
I was fascinated by each woman’s story. My favorite was that of Senator Tammy Duckworth, a living example of strength, courage, determination and grit.
Interwoven with the personal stories and backgrounds of these incredible women are step-by-step explanations of the various flight processes ranging from commercial jetliners to hot-air balloons.
“High Flyers” provides an inspiration for the younger reader and is a window to adventure for others. I couldn’t put this book down and recommend it for readers of all ages and backgrounds.

In High Flyers: 15 Inspiring Women Aviators and Astronauts by Ann McCallum Staats, motivated women literally ascend to the greatest heights surrounded by air or cosmic space. Growing up in military families, or playing competitive sports, or even making music, they ultimately fly in every kind of craft. All of them are trailblazers. Two especially helpful features for each flyer in the book are the highlighted sections about her specialized flight area, and contact information for each flyer for those readers who want to learn even more about these extraordinary women. For younger readers forming ideas about their own futures, this book describes many options open to them. What does it take to fly this high? Here are some uplifting examples!

As the subtitle says, these 15 women really are quite the inspiration to young people. I appreciated the various backgrounds included in these High Flyers but also noted the importance the military had for many of their early aviation careers--despite hurdles.

Young readers will find author Ann McCallum Staats included the aviators and astronauts' websites and social media accounts at the end of each woman's story so readers can connect and learn more.

Though designated (on Amazon) for 12-17, younger readers will also appreciate this book if they have a love for aviation.

Inspiring stories about women who overcame all odds, especially gender discrimination, to make their dreams of becoming high flyers come true. From Tammy Duckworth who is now a U.S. Senator, to Ellen Ochoa who was part of the team that built the Iternational Space Station, the stories of this diverse and courageous group of women is indeed inspiring. Sidebars put their stories in context and place the reader in the history of the time.
