Disability Sport and Recreation (DSR) during May announced a new Gaming & Esports Initiative for anybody to join and play, watch or learn.

In a partnership with the Australian-based esports team Ground Zero Gaming (GZG), DSR has created an online gaming pilot program for the free-to-play video game, Rocket League.

What is it?

What is Rocket League?

Rocket League is a free-to-play video game where rocket-powered vehicles are used to score goals with a giant soccer ball that supports single player, multiplayer and team play.

Players communicate by voice or text on Discord which is visible to everyone. Rocket League is an established eSport that is played on gaming platforms - Microsoft Windows, Steam, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and features on social and streaming platforms like Twitch and YouTube.

Who are GZG?

Ground Zero Gaming (GZG) is one of Oceania’s leading esports competitors, and a pioneer in community gaming activations. GZG compete professionally in Rocket League, League of Legends and Overwatch.

What is Discord?

Discord is a free communications app to share voice, video, and text chat with friends, game communities, and developers.

It is one of the most popular ways to connect with people online in a moderated and safe community environment to participate and engage.

What has happened?

Our community has been active during these events and have had great feedback.

Apart from the players enjoying building new relationships and connections through spending time together playing Rocket League, they have also expressed their skills in creating highlight clips set to music, producing artwork, sharing phone wallpaper designs and tutoring each other in digital skills.

For parents who are curious about why DSR have launched this initiative and where it is going, Liz Tesone had this conversation with Beau Melia from GZG hosted by Chris Smith on LinkedIn Live with the full discussion available on YouTube.

What is next?

  • We are planning to involve some of our friends and partners to stream concerts and performances unique to the Discord community.

  • We will continue to have prizes and giveaways during online play sessions.

  • We are planning to have more casual play sessions like Funky Friday.

  • We will have a gathering arranged for PAX in Melbourne from October 6 to 8.

Please feel free to contact us for further knowledge and also to share with your network where gaming is bringing people together for enjoyment, education and connection!
