Last week Coperni presented one of the most viral moments during this Paris Fashion Week, demonstrating the merging of technology, sustainability and fashion on stage.
For the closing look, model Bella Hadid approached the stage wearing nude undergarments to a team of people holding spray guns. The demonstration continued with the team spraying a white-substance on her made from a mix of natural fibers such as woold, mohair, and cotton in a polymer solution, to form a dress on the spot.
Coperni explained the technology, saying “It can be used to make innovative clothes that can be washed, re-worn and even integrated with diagnostic devices that can monitor the health of the wearer. The technology consists of short fibers bound together with polymers and bio polymers, and greener solvents that deliver the fabric in liquid form, then evaporate when the spray reaches a surface.”
Although its purpose was a beautiful presentation, it points to a bigger theme of putting sustainability and technology at the forefront of the fashion industry. Brands in the industry are expected to double their investments in technology by 2030, while the sustainable fabrics market alone is set to be worth 69.5 billion USD by 2030, with a CAGR of 12.50%. Brands that are slower in investing into technology within the next three years could see a 23% relative growth decline.
The longevity of fashion is dependent on technology and sustainability, to continuously create innovations within the industry while sustaining the Earth’s environments. Coperni’s demonstration presents a grand statement about how traditional methods in fashion do not have to be strictly followed, but instead rethought and refined to futuristic standards.
