The Address Verification process

Address verification is a multi-step process that begins with an input address and ends with a validated address, formatted to include data for increased accuracy and mail deliverability. We'll break it down for you here.

  1. 1
    Input
Non-standardized, non-cleansed address data is provided as input.
  2. 2
    Parse
Identifies the component data elements within your non-standardized address data and break them out into their component parts.
  3. 3
    Correct & Standardize
Eliminates spelling & format errors in address to comply with authoritative standards & improve mail delivery.
  4. 4
    Verify
Confirms an address’s existence against the official USPS address database. Checks if the address is residential or business. Also checks if the address is deliverable using USPS Delivery Point Validation (DPV).

Frequently asked questions about the Address Verification tool

How do I verify an address?

You can simply use our free tool at the top of the page. Enter your address in the form above, then click “Go” or “Submit” to launch the validation process.

I have a PO box address. How do I validate it using your tool?

Our software supports PO box addresses as well. To validate a PO box address, put your PO box information into the Street Address field, then provide the City and State information before proceeding.

For example, let’s use a hypothetical PO Box with the number #123 located in La Crosse, Wisconsin. You would provide the following information:

Street Address: PO Box 123
City: La Crosse
State: WI

How do I verify an incomplete USPS address?

To verify an incomplete USPS address, enter your information in Firstlogic’s USPS address checker at the top of the page. In many cases, the address standardization tool can validate an address after appending missing data such as city, or Zip Code, or street direction.

How do I verify a military address using your tool?

To verify a military address, you should use the guidelines provided by the USPS, which is to set the APO/FPO designation in the City field and the two-letter AA/AE/AP designation in the State field.

An example military address entered into the address verification tool.

AA/AE/AP designations:

  • – “AA” (Armed Forces of the Americas)
  • – “AE” (Armed Forces of Europe)
  • – “AP” (Armed Forces of the Pacific)
