Do you love singing and learning new music? Are you based in the North East? Join a group of people who’ll sing alongside Sage Gateshead’s two choirs at an event this summer.

Sage Gateshead is working with BBC Radio 3 to present a special late-night choral concert for live broadcast on  Saturday 22 July. We’re looking for singers aged 18 and over to perform alongside two existing Sage Gateshead choirs – Voices of the Rivers Edge (VOTRE) and Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia. You will perform an exciting selection of classical and contemporary choral music.

To join this group you just need to love singing and be ready to bring your enthusiasm to every rehearsal.  You are welcome whether you have years of  experience singing in choirs, or none – and whether you read music or not.

Rehearsals will be fun, challenging and give you the confidence and expertise  to be part of a truly unique concert for the region.

Rehearsals

Weekly rehearsals begin in early May. You can choose to rehearse with Voices of the Rivers Edge, Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia or as part of a specially assembled group who’ll sing alongside those two choirs at the live event. Choose the setting that you feel most comfortable with.

  • Voices of the River’s Edge – a fun, social choir of people aged 18-40 which was formed for BBC Proms at Sage Gateshead last year. Rehearsals will take place every Saturday afternoon (2 – 5pm) from Saturday 13 May – Saturday 15 July and will be suitable for all abilities – music will be learnt both by ear and with sheet music.
  • Chorus of Royal Northern Sinfonia – a classical music choir performing large choral works with Royal Northern Sinfonia several times a year, as well as performing independently in their own projects. Rehearsals will take place every Sunday evening (7 – 9.30pm) from Sunday 14 May – Sunday 16 July and will be suitable for people who can confidently read sheet music.
  • Event choir – Sage Gateshead is assembling this group specially for the concert in July. This choir will cover the full range of styles, colours and moods in the concert, sharing moments with both of Sage Gateshead’s choirs. Rehearsals will take place every Thursday evening (7 – 9.30pm) from Thursday 4 May – Thursday 20 July and will be suitable for all abilities – whether you learn best with sheet music or by ear

The three groups will join together for full rehearsals on these dates:

  • Saturday 13th May
  • Saturday 10th June
  • Sunday 16th July
  • Thursday 20th July
  • Friday 21st July
  • Saturday 22nd July (concert day)

Rehearsals will be held at Sage Gateshead and some external venues. An exact schedule with times and venues will be distributed before rehearsals start. You will need to be available for the majority of rehearsals, especially in the last week before the concert.

It’s also important to note that the concert will start at 10.15pm and last around an hour so you’ll need to be comfortable performing late at night.
