What educators are saying

My students loved this craftivity! We were deep in the fraction trenches and this helped solidy decomposing whole shapes into fractions for many of my strugglers.

Description

Welcome to Math Art activity designed to engage 4th Grade students in both fraction review and practice as well as artistic expression in a fraction art craftivity! In this 4th Grade fraction art craftivity, students will delve into the world of math art through hands-on fraction art activity.

Math: This lesson begins with a fraction review of basic concepts, ensuring students have a solid foundation before diving into the artistic process. You will have access to a PowerPoint presentation and a video that visually explains and/or reviews the content. Students will recognize that each part of a rectangle or circle is a fraction of the whole and that equal parts do not need to be the same shape. The shapes can be partitioned into two, four, eight, or sixteen equal parts using horizontal vertical, or diagonal lines.

Art: Next, students will embark on a fun fraction art project. They will use their imagination to create an abstract art or a figurative art. You can even introduce the concept of symmetry and they can learn about radio symmetry, symmetric, and asymmetric figures.

By the end of the activity, not only will students have reinforced their understanding of division and fraction review, but they'll also have a beautiful fraction art artwork to showcase their learning.

Get ready to combine math and art in an exciting exploration of fractions.

Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole.
Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. Justify decompositions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model. Examples: 3/8 = 1/8 + 1/8 + 1/8; 3/8 = 1/8 + 2/8; 2 1/8 = 1 + 1 + 1/8 = 8/8 + 8/8 + 1/8.
