Winning The War For Talent: Small Business Strategies For A Tough Job Market

Adam Povlitz is CEO/President, Anago Cleaning Systems, a leading franchise focused on technological advances in janitorial operations.

The war for talent is real, and small businesses are feeling the pinch. In today's competitive job market, it's more important than ever for small businesses to have a strong employer brand and offer competitive benefits and compensation. But it's not just about the money—creating a positive and inclusive work environment and providing opportunities for professional development are crucial to attracting and retaining top talent.

Build a strong employer brand.

In a competitive job market, small businesses must rise and attract and retain top talent. Building a solid employer brand is one way to do this. A strong brand separates your company from the competition, making it an attractive workplace. When people love the brand and core values, they tend to want to be a part of the culture. Here are three top tips for building a strong employer brand:

1. Define and communicate your company's values and mission. Ensure your company’s core values are clearly defined and communicated to potential employees. Values should be reflected in everything you do, from company culture to marketing materials.

2. Provide opportunities for professional development and growth. Employees want to grow in their professions. Offer training and skill development opportunities and encourage employees to take on new challenges. This can help them grow their careers and stay engaged in their work.

3. Be transparent and honest in your communication with employees. Employees appreciate employers who are honest and transparent with them. Be upfront about your expectations and be willing to listen to their feedback.

Offering competitive benefits is a must in today's job market. Small businesses must prioritize providing competitive salaries and wages to successfully attract and retain talent. This means regularly researching market compensation rates and adjusting accordingly. In addition to competitive wages, offering a comprehensive benefits package is essential. This may include various health insurance options, life insurance and a retirement savings plan with employer-matching contributions.

Small businesses should invest in each employee’s work and work-life balance and consider flex work or remote options to accommodate the needs of their employees (when applicable). By providing competitive benefits, small businesses can create a more attractive work environment and increase their chances of winning the war for talent.

Don’t just talk the talk; walk the walk!

Create an open and inclusive environment of respect, open communication and feedback. Employees who feel comfortable expressing their ideas are more likely to be engaged and productive. Small businesses can encourage open communication by creating a safe and positive work environment. This means listening to employee feedback and taking action to address their concerns. It also means being open-minded to new ideas and suggestions from employees.

Prioritize employee well-being and mental health. Small businesses can do this by offering valuable benefits and resources that support overall health and well-being, such as health insurance, mental health counseling and flexible work arrangements. Generally, most people are concerned with their retirement years and the value of saving money. Help your employees ease those fears.

Celebrating employee successes and achievements is imperative to create a positive work environment. Employees who are appreciated are more likely to be engaged and productive. Small businesses can celebrate employee successes by recognizing their achievements in team meetings, bonuses or promotions and providing growth opportunities.

Creating professional development and growth opportunities is also essential for retaining top talent. Employees who feel they add value and grow in their careers are more likely to be satisfied and engaged, leading to increased productivity. Small businesses can create opportunities for professional development by offering training programs, tuition reimbursement and mentoring programs. This level of support can encourage employees to take on new challenges and responsibilities.

At my company, Anago Cleaning Systems, we make every possible effort to take care of our teams outside the four walls of our company. We do what we can to help them face the elements of their outside lives so that they are worry-free (or at least much less worried) while focused on work. We understand that each person has their professional and private lives and help create a structure of work/life balance, but also recognize that energies from each flow back and forth. A good day at work carries through to a great day at home and vice versa.

Just like customers, reach talented employees where they are.

Small businesses can activate technology to improve their talent acquisition and management strategies. Applicant tracking systems (ATS) can help small businesses streamline hiring by automating tasks such as resume screening, scheduling interviews and tracking candidate progress. Try using video calls to conduct interviews with candidates who are in remote areas or unable to travel to the office.

Social media can connect your business with potential candidates, allowing you to interact directly with them and build relationships before formal recruitment processes. Data analytics can identify employee turnover and performance trends and develop targeted recruitment and retention strategies. By leveraging technology, small businesses can improve their chances of winning the war for talent and attracting top-tier professionals.

Taking care of people is integral to the success and sustainability of any business. When business leaders prioritize the well-being of their employees and customers, it can create a positive work environment and foster loyalty and a sense of belonging. Ultimately, caring for people can enhance the organization's overall performance and reputation and establish a foundation for long-term success.
