The Berlin chapter of Young China Watchers would like to invite you to a private lunch with Richard Heydarian. He will share his observations on China’s influence i n Southeast Asia and how ASEAN, it’s individual members, and the Philippines in particular are navigating U.S.-China rivalry in the region.
China's influence, whether through economic globalization or security acitivities, is nowhere felt more intensely than in Southeast Asia. Caught between the U.S. and China great power rivalry, countries in the region carefully navigate opportunities and risks, striving to maintain strategic neutrality. While seeking economic opportunities with Beijing, countries like the Philippines and others in Southeast Asia are actively exploring new avenues to resist China's influence in the South China Sea. One such strategic approach, could center around “minilateralism,” overcome paralysis within the ASEAN bloc. The discussion over lunch will shed light on Southeast Asia's nuanced response to China's influence, emphasizing the potential of minilateral cooperation in navigating growing geopolitical dynamics.
