Storytelling at its best! As an avid book reader I find that most playbooks have the same rhythm when it comes to the rules of success. They’re more of a checklist and lots of references to what not to do in business. In his introduction, Gary states that it took him his “whole life” to write this book. This to me, means that the author put his blood sweat and tears, and all the meaningful experiences in the many hats he’s worn throughout his life.Experiences are what shape us and the author did a great job making this book relatable to men and women of all walks of life.Great read! Highly recommend…

Gary Hernbroth’s Twist the Familiar offers a wealth of valuable lessons and insights. As the son of a teacher and a successful business coach for the hospitality industry, Gary expertly weaves engaging and often humorous stories throughout the book. His unique storytelling style, combined with visually rich anecdotes, makes the book both entertaining and educational.

With its sports themes and practical advice, "Twist the Familiar" is an excellent resource for those starting their careers or looking to enhance their personal and professional growth. It encourages readers to think outside the box, tackle challenges creatively, and “twist the familiar” to elevate both themselves and their organizations. The conversational tone and the structured playbook, at the end of each chapter, make it easy to apply the lessons to real life. This is a must-read for any young professional seeking fresh approaches to problem-solving and career advancement. Wish this type of book was available, when we graduated college as a young professional.

With gray hair hopefully comes wisdom and our williningness to share, as Gary and I did on pages 59-60, a learning moment, in a startup environment.

Gary Hernbroth is a first-rate storyteller. Twist the Familiar entertains and inspires from Chapter 1 to the last page. Even if you’ve left the world of working for others, Solopreneurs can relate to his messages.

Gary uses both his business and personal life as examples of how Life can trip you up and cause you to rethink ‘why’ you’re doing what you’re doing. His Building Your Playbook at the end of each chapter contains questions that help guide you to find the answers in your own life.

I thoroughly enjoyed chapters like If We’re Not Getting Better, We’re Getting Worse, Everyone Gets Their Butt Kicked Sooner or Later, and Don’t Let Quacking Ducks Kill a Creative Idea. I think he was talking to me in that last chapter.

Twist the Familiar is an amazing, fun book packed with humor and visually inspired anecdotes that will inspire you one way or another. I highly recommend it for everyone in business and for personal inspiration.

Having enjoyed Gary as a motivational speaker I want to say that this is the book to read for anyone who wants to be successful in the event and meeting industry. Without a doubt, "Twist the Familiar" should be part of the required reading and study process for anyone who is taking the CSEP and the CMP exams. As a CSEP, I would recommend this book as part of all training for sales, event planning and meeting management. Gary takes all his years of experience in the Hospitality industry and presents it in an entertaining and easy format to help the future event professionals know what to expect, and how to learn from mistakes we all make in the trenches. I especially enjoyed "when the flip flop flops", as it was my own true story, and something I have shared in training with new event planners on what not to do. It may be a casual world but dressing for success still matters, and you can judge a book by the cover. We should never become too casual, or too comfortable when it comes to making a first impression and always try to build return customers and build long lasting business relationships.

This book has alot of real life stories that pertain to everyone both for business growth, but also life growth. The one thing I really enjoy is that each story is different and you can skip around to learn the lessons. You don't have to read in order. Just skip around for the story you are interested in at the time. I have used some of these stories in my business.
In my opinion the Author did a fantastic job.

Treasure trove of ideas, brilliant insights, a library of business and leadership knowledge, thought provoking and entertaining as well😊

Gary does a wonderful job of story telling with “Twist the Familiar” . A unique element is that he wrote the book by actually having a conversation with the reader which was enjoyable and made it easier to read and comprehend while providing his own style which was refreshing. Really liked the way each chapter ends with a structured “ Building your Playbook “ to provide some insightful questions that will prompt action. A valuable resource that everyone could use in building their business and personal careers.

Every so often you run across a book that you cannot put down until you have finished reading it and becoming absorbed in it from cover to cover.

Gary’s book “Twist the Familiar” has encapsulated a lifetime of valuable personal and business experiences of his own and also those of others. He has turned a collection of important stories into a page-turning book which I can highly recommend to anyone who is open to deep introspection through memorable lessons for their business and personal life.
