The Note Who Faced the Music Hardcover – Picture Book, March 14, 2023
Purchase options and add-ons
Half Note doesn’t feel whole. With two beats, she isn’t as big and beautiful as Whole Note, or as quick and upbeat as Quarter Note. She worries she’ll never measure up! So when the other members of the musical staff are at rest, she picks up like a fast tempo and leaves.
But Composer and the staff can’t play anything noteworthy without Half Note. Their only hope is to convince Half Note to change her tune and come back.
This hilarious, offbeat tale of sheet music in treble will strike a chord with anyone who’s felt out of sync, ringing with reassurance that everyone has a part to play when working as a team. At the coda, readers can develop their ear with a glossary of musical terms included.

About the Author
Lindsay Bonilla is the author of multiple picture books, including I Love You with All of My Hearts (Creative Editions) and Polar Bear Island (Sterling). While she doesn’t consider herself to be very musical, she has dabbled in playing keyboard, cello, and, most recently, the top two strings of an electric bass. She lives in North Canton, Ohio, with her husband and two sons.
Mark Hoffmann thinks all his talent must have gone into illustration, as his ability to carry a tune is nonexistent. Luckily, his strengths have been put to good use in many picture books, including A Penny’s Worth (Page Street Kids). Mark loves sharing playfully educational stories like this one with his son. He also works as a college professor and lives in Salem, New Hampshire.

About the authors
Howdy-
My Name is Mark Hoffmann, but some call me Hoffmann or Hoffy. I am an award winning illustrator, painter, author and professor. I was raised in Minnesota (Go Snow!) and earned my BFA from Rhode Island School of Design, and MFA from UMass- Dartmouth.
I hope to create fun through reading and learning with my books. As an avid believer in fact, I hope to impart some wisdom through my books while entertaining through the humorous narrative form.
I hope you like them and walk away a little more knowledgable.
When I'm not creating or teaching, I spend my free time looking for old junk and wood boxes at antique fairs. (Go Old Stuff!) I currently live in New Hampshire with my wife and son.

Lindsay Bonilla spent her childhood voraciously reading books, scribbling stories, and taking the lead roles in her front porch solo stage plays. As a theatre and religion major at Northwestern University, she fell in love with folktales and world travel. This led her to Madrid where she spent a year and a half touring Spain and Portugal with the audience-participatory theatre company, Interacting.
Lindsay founded World of Difference Ltd. in 2007 with the aim of sharing high-energy, interactive storytelling programs based on folktales from around the world with audiences of all ages. Since then, she has had the opportunity to tell stories to school children in Haiti and Ghana and teach workshops to youth leaders in Guatemala and El Salvador. All of these experiences have made her passionate about building understanding and relationships across cultures while inspiring the imagination.
Lindsay is the author of POLAR BEAR ISLAND (Union Square, 2018), winner of a 2018 Parents’ Choice Silver Award; I LOVE YOU WITH ALL OF MY HEARTS (Creative Editions, 2021), and THE NOTE WHO FACED THE MUSIC (Page Street Kids, 2023). Her forthcoming titles include THE STORYTELLER (Nancy Paulsen/Penguin, 2024) and THE HOLE (Nancy Paulsen/Penguin, 2025).
When she’s not writing or telling stories, she’s busy building Legos with her kids as they brainstorm her next book idea. Lindsay’s love for travel has taken her to twenty eight countries on five continents, but most days she can be found at home in North Canton, Ohio with her husband, two wild and creative sons, and their rescue dog, Blitzen.
Lindsay is a member of the National Storytelling Network (NSN) and the Society for Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI). Learn more at lindsaybonilla.com.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2023Lindsay Bonilla has done it again with this musical, whimsical creative story. The alliteration is fun to read and the puns make adults giggle. Kids love the cute illustrations. The story has an empowering ending which proves that everyone plays an important role in life. Our older boys enjoyed the glossary in the back as it reflected all they have learned in piano lessons. We will be gifting this book to our piano teacher and her kids, for sure!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 15, 2023This story is so sweet and teaches the lesson of knowing your value and not comparing yourself to others. It's a great little story for everyone, and an especially nice treat for the music lover as it's laced with clever music puns throughout. I read it to my little one as soon as it arrived!
- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2023This is a cute book. I’ll probably tuck it away or return it though I’m an elementary music teacher and I don’t think it will be useful in my classroom. There’s A LOT of vocabulary to cover in here and they fly by with out elaboration so it’s only punny if you know everything already: notes values (obviously), whole and half rests, flat, sharp, natural, flag, syncopation, coda, forte, accelerando, crescendo.
It’s a cute story though with beautiful and colorful illustrations.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2023We gifted this to our piano lesson instructor and she loved it. Such a cleverly written book. The more times we read it, the more witty puns we found.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 25, 2024This book was absolutely adorable. I read it for my childrens' classes via zoom and the kids loved the story of the Half Note not feeling it's whole self and being picked up by its fellow notes.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 5, 2023Wonderful illustrations and a catchy story of how one can feel out of tune with their place in life.
The feeling of being "unappreciated" is something we all may face at times. The whole "musical staff"
comes together to show important a single note can really be.
- Reviewed in the United States on March 16, 2023Great for music loving families and curious kids alike. This story provides so much opportunity for discussion and learning about sheet music. We loved the puns and is so much fun to read aloud!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 6, 2024Kids learning to read music and/or play instruments will delight in this fun, pun-filled story about a half-note who learns her value. The book gives lessons in the value of diversity as it shows how each unique note is important to creating a beautiful musical composition. I enjoyed the colorful illustrations and the helpful glossary in the back of the book.
