East Africa Regional Lead

Reflecting on #GRF 2023: As the year ends, here's a brief of my key takeaways from the Global Refugee Forum 2023. This forum, held every four years, is a crucial platform for discussing all aspects of refugee life - rights, education, health, work, and more. This year, saw a remarkable increase in refugee delegates and a shift towards meaningful refugee participation (MRP). From just about 70 refugee leaders in #GRF2019 to over 300 this time, it's a step forward. Yet, many Africa refugee leaders faced unfair visa denials, There is a need to advocate for better freedom of movement and recognition of refugee travel documents in the coming years. Enhancing meaningful refugee participation(MRP) shouldn't be a tickbox anymore or a nice thing to explore, we need to push for meaningful refugee participation to avoid and discourage refugee tokenism. I noted increased refugee involvement in side events and panels. They moderated various sessions where over +1500 significant commitments and pledges were made. On a personal note, I had the honor to moderate along side Nasra Ismail a high-level panel focusing on economic inclusion for refugees, featuring  Sajjad Malik, UNHCR Director, Division of Resilience and Solutions, and ministers from various governments and organizations actors supporting economic inclusion, see here the pledge https://lnkd.in/dHZ4tRAk The unfiltered, honest platform at Impact Hub, the R-Space - Refugee Space organized by refugees themselves provided a crucial opportunity to openly discuss critical issues like funding, accountability, representation, participation localization, and many more. A space worth adopting for future high-level meetings/forums. Thanks to UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency Education for enabling my participation in advancing the education and socio-economic inclusion agenda for refugees. Looking forward to the upcoming and continued works with Refugees SEAT, am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead in East Africa, and am proud of the work done with the Youth Voices Community (YVC) an RLO, which I have been leading over the last six years advocating for inclusive social economic policies and programs in Kenya. Finally, Congratulations to Abdullahi Mire, A former refugee from Daadab Refugee Camp in Kenya, for winning the 2023 Global UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency #NansenAward laureate. I will share other #GRF moments in the new year, for now, Happy New Prosperous 2024.
