#Plastics, #Offshore, #Ocean,#Energy, #Flowline, #communication #cable, #Decommissioning --- In addition to subsea hydrocarbon flowlines, there are numerous high-duty underwater power and communication cables worldwide, spanning a length of over 1 million kilometers. To put it into perspective, the length of these submarine cables and flowlines is enough to circle the earth more than 30 times. And what do they have in common? They contain a considerable amount of plastics (100,000s of metric tonnes), serving primarily to protect against seawater corrosion and as functional insulation materials. Our newly published paper discussed these issues in detail and demonstrated the degradation and lifetime assessment of the plastics at varying oceanic depths. This reflects an excellent (and well-appreciated) contribution by all the co-authors, including Laura Machuca Suarez, Stuart Higgins, Sangwon Suh (UC Santa Barbara), Tamara Galloway (University of Exeter), Pete Halley (The University of Queensland), Shuhei Tanaka (Kyoto University), and Mariano Iannuzzi. https://lnkd.in/gKbHPz_x This study was supported by the Australian #National_Decommissioning_Research_Initiative (#NDRI) within National Energy Resources Australia (#NERA).

👉 👀 The overall goal of LH2CRAFT is to develop next generation, sustainable, commercially attractive, and safe long-term storage and long distance #transportation of Liquid #hydrogen (LH2) for commercial #vessels (or even as #fuel in certain applications). 🛳 ⚓ ℹ LH2CRAFT will also develop a preliminary integrated #ship design and carry out the corresponding cost estimation, achieving reduced boil-off rates of 0.5 % per day. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) significantly strengthened its greenhouse gas emission strategy in its latest update. ⚓ Referencing the 2008 emission levels, the committee now targets: 👉 20 % emission reduction by 2030 👉 70 % reduction by 2040 and  👉 net-zero emissions by 2050. Doosan Fuel Cell Co., Ltd., in collaboration with HyAxiom, Inc., has achieved a significant milestone in the realm of maritime technology. Their Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) for maritime application has successfully passed an environmental test conducted by DNV, one of the world’s top three classification associations. This achievement marks the world’s first environmental test clearance for an SOFC fuel cell designed specifically for maritime use. The rigorous testing encompassed various real-world operating conditions, including temperature, humidity, vibration, tilt, and electromagnetic waves.
