A Step-by-Step Guide to IVF Treatment Process

In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a reproductive technology. This procedure is a highly specialized procedure in which fertilization takes place outside the body in a laboratory.

IVF is the most commonly performed fertility treatment. The present article describes IVF treatment step by step.

IVF journey begins with a doctor consultation:

The IVF cycle begins with diagnostic investigations.

The common laboratory investigations are:

• Thyroid profile

• Screening for sexually transmitted diseases

• Semen analysis

After all laboratory tests are done, the IVF specialist plans the IVF treatment. After 2-5 weeks, the IVF cycle is started based on the menstrual cycle. The uterus and fallopian tubes are thoroughly evaluated to check for any abnormalities requiring surgical repair.

Ovarian stimulation:

This step includes the following considerations:

• Medications for ovarian stimulation are started for 7-14 days.

• Multiple eggs are matured as a result of these medications. On average, 10-20 eggs are retrieved for IVF.

• Hormonal testing and vaginal ultrasounds are performed.

• Estrogen levels are determined.

• Trigger shots are given.

• Egg Retrieval

• Using ultrasound guidance, a thin needle is inserted into the ovaries to collect the mature eggs from the follicles.

• The retrieved eggs are transferred to the laboratory for fertilization.

• Women may experience slight cramping and discomfort.

Sperm Collection

Sperm is collected from partner or donor bank. The sperm is processed and checked for motility.

Fertilization

• Transfer of Mature eggs into a special culture medium, placed in an incubator.

• Fertilization of retrieved eggs with sperm.

• There are two ways of fertilization. In the conventional medium, sperm is placed in the culture medium in a small petri dish containing an egg. These are incubated together in the dish in the lab. Sperm fertilises the egg.

• In ICSI, one sperm is injected into the cytoplasm of the egg.

Embryo Transfer

• Genetic testing is done.

• The selected embryo is transferred into the uterus within 1 to 2 months following egg retrieval using a soft, flexible, and thin catheter to transfer the embryo into the uterus.

• An abdominal ultrasound ensures that the tip of the catheter places the embryo at the best location for the embryo to implant.

Pregnancy Test

• About 12 days, the pregnancy test is done. The patient is referred to the Gynecologist.

• It may take 10-14 days to confirm pregnancy.

• Required supplements may be advised by the doctor.

Continued care:

• Fertility specialist or obstetrician guides you throughout your pregnancy.

• You will be guided for food and lifestyle modifications.

• Regular follow-ups
