The British Embassy Amman has a vacancy for a Finance Officer, job grade Administrative Officer (AO), on a fixed term contract of six (6) months to cover a period of maternity leave.

This role is part of the Corporate Services Team (CST) within the British Embassy Amman. The jobholder plays a key role in managing and delivering the Amman Post finance and procurement portfolio, dealing with a range of corporate returns and supporting the Finance Manager as directed to manage the Embassy’s annual budget in compliance with HMG rules. 

 

Duties and responsibilities:

  • Prepare Network Post Account Sheet and replenish cash imprests.
  • Assist in preparation of cash funding profile.
  • Manage Bank & Cash balances to ensure adequate funding and provide support to the Regional Finance Hub in Manila.
  • Prepare monthly salaries for all country based staff (CBS). This includes ensuring all data is included in the payroll system. Accountable for the process of CBS social security contributions.
  • Keep accounts filing system up to date at all times and ensure good record keeping.
  • Follow up on payment of debit memos to ensure swift payment and reconciliation.
  • Daily reconciliation of cash.
  • Prepare journals.
  • Contract management and tendering with local suppliers and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with existing Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) policies and best practice to reduce financial risk.
  • New supplier verification checks.
  • Keep procurement filing system up to date at all times.
  • Follow up on contracts to make sure they are up to date.
  • Run regular sessions on purchase to pay and cards use to staff.
  • Assist Finance Manager and provide cover during periods of absence.

Eligibility:

If you are selected for this position, we will be able to employ you as long as:

  • You have the right to live and work in Jordan; and
  • You receive the appropriate level of security clearance.
  • Previous experience in a relevant finance, accounting, or similar role, ideally for at least two (2) years.
  • Fluency in English and Arabic, both written and spoken. Able to express ideas and messages clearly and concisely, both orally and in written communication. Exceptional writing and presentation skills.
  • Strong IT skills and literacy in Microsoft Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams), particularly Excel. Accurate typing and proofreading skills.
  • Holds at least a bachelor’s degree, ideally in finance/ accounting.
  • Strong organisation skills and ability to manage competing priorities. Self-starter, comfortable with strategy and delivery with minimal support.
  • Demonstrates initiative, adaptability, and the ability to work flexibly to organise and prioritise workloads, organise records, meet deadlines and maintain close attention to detail. Proactive approach to problem solving.
  • Strong team player with partnering skills with a diverse range of customers.
  • Demonstrates courtesy and consideration in dealing with internal and external stakeholders. Able to show discretion in handling any sensitive matters, with the trust of all involved.

The Embassy aims to offer an attractive working environment and remuneration package for this role, including a non-negotiable gross salary of JOD 1,215 per month based on 37 hours per week.

Salary will be paid gross and you are expected to comply with your tax obligations through completion of a tax return to the local authorities. If exceptionally you are not liable to pay Jordanian tax, you will receive a net salary, which is minus the deduction of an equivalent level of local tax. Further information on this will be provided at interview if necessary.

This role is for a full-time employment, on a fixed term contract of six (6) months to cover a period of maternity leave. The successful candidate will be subject to a 90-days probationary period (as appropriate). The appointment is subject to satisfactory local and UK security clearances. The selected candidate must have the right to live and work in Jordan.

Normal working hours at the Embassy are from Sunday to Wednesday from 08:00-15:30 and Thursday from 08:00-15:00. The Embassy operates a flexible working policy that allows staff to work different hours as well as allowing staff to work from home one day a week, based on operational requirements and agreement with the line manager, and in line with FCDO and Embassy policies. The jobholder should be flexible in their approach to hours worked as these will also be dictated by operational needs and may involve working out of hours (evenings/ weekends).
