PSM's Dr Jeyakumar arrested as eviction of Kanthan farmers begins


IPOH: Parti Sosialis Malaysia (PSM) chairman Dr Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj and three others have been arrested by police during a farm eviction process in Kanthan, near Tambun.

Party secretary-general A. Sivarajan said farmers in the area were engaged in a stand-off with Land and Mines Office enforcement officers on Tuesday (Oct 24).

He claimed that an officer pushed activist Chong Yee Shan in the commotion, causing her to fall and break some teeth.

On Oct 19, The Star reported that more than 130 farmers in Kanthan were worried about their livelihood after they were ordered to leave their farms.

They had handed a memorandum addressed to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim at his Tambun parliamentary service centre in Meru.

According to farmer Liew Wong, 57, he received an eviction order from the Kinta district land office on Oct 13.

He claimed that there had been no warning, nor had any representative of the authorities met with them.

The notice merely stated that he had seven days to vacate the land as he was working it illegally, he added.

The police are expected to release a statement on the incident later in the day.
