IPOH: A baby boy, about two to three days old, was found inside a bag left near a drain behind a shophouse in Ayer Tawar, Manjung.

Manjung OCPD Asst Comm Mohamed Nordin Abdullah said the baby was found by a 45-year-old man at about 8pm on Saturday (Nov 25) before he reported to the police.

ACP Mohamed Nordin said the baby has been sent to the Seri Manjung Hospital and is in the neonatal intensive care unit.

"Checks conducted by the doctor found no external injuries and the baby is healthy. The hospital and Social Welfare Department officers are monitoring the matter," he said in a statement.

ACP Mohamed Nordin said the case has been classified under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

"We are now trying to track the baby's family. Anyone responsible in taking care of children under 12 that had purposely abandoned their children can be jailed up to seven years or fined, or both if convicted.

"Those who have information about the matter should come forward to investigating officer Insp Nur Munawara Ahmad at 011-1624 0391," he added.
