KUALA LUMPUR: Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul says he will reveal the names of MPs who fail to undergo mandatory health examinations by Friday (Dec 1).

"To date, a total of 213 MPs and six Senators have undergone health checks.

"However, eight MPs have yet to undergo the medical examination.

"I will display (their names) if they have not done so and submitted a copy of the medical report to the Dewan Rakyat secretariat by Dec 1," Johari said just before the start of Parliament proceedings on Wednesday (Nov 29).

He advised the eight MPs to be careful when tucking in to durian during the Fruit Fest to be held at Parliament's multi-purpose hall later, at 1pm.

"To those attending the durian fest, particularly the eight who have not gone for their check-ups, please be careful," he added.

The issue of MPs' health status arose following the death of domestic trade and cost of living minister Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub from a brain haemorrhage in July.

In September, Johari announced that all MPs must undergo mandatory health checks and submit the medical report to Parliament by Oct 31 as a precautionary measure, However, the deadline was extended to Nov 30.

Johari added that he had witnessed 11 MPs collapsing while in the House over the past 15 years.

Since the 2018 general election, four MPs have died – the majority from heart attacks.

Johari said it was crucial for the Dewan Rakyat to have a copy of MPs' medical records to allow for proper response in the event of an medical emergency affecting an MP while in the House.
