Ups and downs are part of the freelancer journey. Some of us have a steady flow of work almost all year round, but most of us have slower periods. In some cases, those "famine weeks" happen more or less at the same moment every year, but translators and copywriters know that it's precisely when you expect a slow February that clients will be knocking on your door and when you give up on your Summer holidays to work that you'll be waiting in vain for projects to come in front of your laptop with the ventilator on 5 and sweat dripping down your back. Dealing with the feast and famine periods is a major part of the freelance experience. Of course, you can do your best to have enough saved for meagre months or plan a training cycle when you know for sure work will be slow for a few weeks. But the main thing you have to deal with is not the lack of work itself (like many freelance homeworkers, sloth is definitely my sin), but the gripping fear that no more work will EVER come, that you will not be able to pay your bills, that you will have to sell your house, that your children will starve to death and that you will end up tap-dancing under a bridge to earn a few euros to buy stale bread. The anguish that grips freelancers when they are not as successful as LinkedIn tells them they should be, at least for a few weeks, months or years, is the worst feeling. It makes them feel like failures, it encourages them to compare themselves with other, more successful peers (or at least peers pretending to be modern St Jeromes and Shakespeares with a touch of Steve Job and a pinch of Bill Gates) and it blinds them. While they worry about not working ever again, they don't focus on a more constructive approach: taking the opportunity of their empty planning to sow the seeds of future success and activity. Don't be paralysed by the lack of work: use it to train, prospect, discuss, network, work on your business, decorate your house, learn how to bake or take a new pilates class... Or travel with your family... You can't work non-stop all year round anyway and you will not be able to change lanes from transcreating to brain surgery overnight. #freelancer #litranslators #copywriter #coach

Today we had a long talk with a colleague with 30+ years experience in the translation industry. We discussed the evolution of technology and how it has completely changed the way things work. We talked about the lack, or prevalence, of quality personnel for demanding tasks in a fast-moving business climate. We spoke of terminology management and translation memory, of the quality of machine translations, and the collapse of human translation pricing with the rise of AI. Our colleague was very sceptical and recently sold all his clients because of his dwindling motivation and industry fatigue. We were more optimistic and pointed out the opportunities in a globalizing world. Sure, many translation projects are handled by machines today. But there are many organizations we work with, be it legal practices, pharmaceutical manufacturers, software developers and dozens of other industry professionals, who understand the importance of sentient translations and how sometimes a single translation error can completely undermine their aims and easily outstrip the cost of, frankly, affordable human translations today. Even in the age of machine translations, the human touch – with its cognitive nuance, creativity, understanding, and consistency – still carries value that people are willing to pay for. We'd love to hear your thoughts and/or experience of how this applies to you.
