PETALING JAYA: The crime index in Selangor shows an increase of 758 cases or 5.84% last year compared to the previous year, says Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan.

The Selangor police chief said 13,740 cases were recorded in 2023, compared to 12,982 in 2022.

"From the total cases, violent crimes also recorded a 5.92% increase last year, while crimes involving belongings also spiked 5.82%," he told a press conference on Friday (Feb 23).

In the war against drugs, Comm Hussein said 18,931 narcotic cases were recorded in the state last year.

"We also arrested 22,981 individuals and seized RM154.5mil worth of drugs.

"The number of cases increased by 1,940 cases, while the number of those detained spiked by 817 individuals compared to 2022," he said.

Meanwhile, Comm Hussein said commercial crime cases doubled last year, with 5,753 commercial crime cases recorded in 2023, versus 2,860 in 2022.

"Majority of the cases were scams, including love scams, loan scams, and financial fraud," he said.

A total of 173,473 accident cases were recorded in Selangor last year, including 1,035 cases involving fatalities, he said.
