The King Center has announced that Dexter Scott King, the youngest son and third child of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King, has died.

King died on Jan. 22 at the age of 62 after a "valiant battle with prostate cancer," according to the King Center.

"He progressed calmly in his rest at home with me in Malibu", says his closest companion of 21 years, his most grounded ally and spouse of 11 years, Leah Weber Lord. "He gave it all that and combat this awful sickness until the end. Brought into the world in Atlanta on Jan. 30, 1961, he was named after Dexter Road Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama, where his dad served his most memorable pastorate. He was the second-conceived child of Dr. and Mrs. King and was just seven years of age when his dad was killed in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1968. Like his dad, he experienced childhood in Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, where his granddad filled in as minister. He was an alum of Frederick Douglas Secondary School, where he played football and partook in numerous other school associations. He then, at that point, emulated his dad's example at Morehouse School in Atlanta.
