Once bitten twice shy!! I am sure we all have heard and experienced that maxim. And how hard it is to overcome that #experience and #fear of trying it again, let alone go and do something extra. Acceptance, facing the fear and reframing help but it is easier said than done because Hard is not relative; hard is hard. Fear is complex and personal —what intimidates or paralyzes some can motivate others to act boldly. Many #successful #leaders I coach have brilliant skills; they are intelligent and know how to wear their #armour well. We all have created those armours to feel safe, and that's fine until it serves the purpose. The #challenge is when that armour becomes a #habit even when it is not serving, but eroding, spreading the toxins and hampering growth. #Innovation is critical to drive growth and it is also anxiety-inducing. According to #McKinsey, #three #fears hold back corporate innovation more than others: 𝗙𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗿 is the biggest differentiator with predictable consequences. When we believe our decisions can risk our career advancement or compensation, #loss #aversion takes the steering wheel and drives us to hedge our bets. This results in employees being reluctant to fully invest in innovation, let alone in a single innovation project. 𝗨𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗹. Such fears trigger the ambiguity effect, a #cognitive #bias that leads to avoiding options with uncertain outcomes. Leaders seeking more control and payoff over outcomes often prioritize less risky innovations, producing the counterproductive result of less experimentation, ambitious ideas, and creativity. They may rely on past dynamics as predictors of future performance—a risky assumption, in dynamic times that can plague average or below-average innovators three times as much as leading innovators. 𝐅𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐬𝐦 is another big hurdle that we all feel to some degree. #Group #conformity becomes a basic survival instinct, and these tendencies can imperil companies’ innovation success. Industry norms shape employees’ sense of what is possible and might discourage bringing forward ideas that sharply break with convention. This conformity bias leads to following the crowd, even if it is detrimental to the organization's success. Left unchecked, these fears can compound into large cultural barriers, transforming initial enthusiasm for innovation into apathy. One of my other favourite books is from this guy, Peter Diamandis. You might know him from some of his other initiatives like Singularity University and the XPRIZE Foundation. https://lnkd.in/gJDK7C-5 Both these initiatives are incredible in terms of actual positive impact. In regards to the book, it’s called “Abundance”, which he cowrote with Steven Kotler. The book is packed full of examples of how exponential technologies, innovation, and collaboration can be drawn on to overcome the world's most pressing challenges. Similar to Carol Dweck’s book on mindset, it also outlines two opposing mindset types, in this case, abundance and scarcity. I’ve always like to personally explain the differences in the following way. Someone with a scarcity mindset is focused on how to get a bigger slice of the pie. Someone with an abundance mindset is focused on how to sustainably grow the pie. One sees the pie as finite and to get a bigger piece means taking pie away from someone else. The other knows that if you look for new approaches you can find ways grow the pie, avoiding the zero sum game. Similar to my post a few days ago, I wondered how each of these mindsets would manifest in a political leader? What signs would indicate whether they were a political leader with a growth mindset or one with a scarcity mindset? For political leaders with an abundance mindset, you’d most likely notice the following. They would: - see challenges not as insurmountable obstacles but as opportunities for growth and innovation - prioritize collaboration, investing in education, infrastructure, and technology to unlock the potential of their constituents and build a brighter future for all - foster a culture of optimism, resilience, and inclusivity, celebrating successes and inspiring confidence in the ability to overcome any challenge. On the other hand, for political leaders with a scarcity mindset, most likely you’d see them approaching things in a very different way. They would: - lean towards approaching governance with fear, divisiveness, and even self-interest - often hoard resources, cling to outdated ideologies, and prioritize short-term gains over long-term sustainability - view the world through a zero-sum lens, believing that someone else's gain must come at their expense - have a leadership style that would unfortunately breed insecurity, inequality, and distrust amongst their constituents, exacerbating divisions and undermining progress. If you are ever wondering why a political leader may be making a decision that’s baffling, you might want to consider their mindset. A leader’s mindset could potentially explain a lot.

Tip #5 ✨  👉 Recognise progress, not perfection   It can be easy to be judgemental and critical. Instead, take time to celebrate progress. Celebrate the small steps rather than waiting for the seismic shifts. The 1992 US Men’s Olympic basketball team—often referred to as the “#DreamTeam”—is a fitting analogy for the upside, and downside, of working together as “one firm.” The team included some of the greatest players in the sport (Charles Barkley, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Magic Johnson, Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Karl Malone, and so on). Yet in its first month of practice, the Dream Team lost to a group of college players by eight points in a scrimmage. In the words of Michael Jordan, “We got killed today. ... We’re so out of sync. ... We don’t have any continuity at all.” Scottie Pippen put it more succinctly: “We do not know how to play with each other.” This wake-up call—to operate as one team—was what they needed to come together and ultimately dominate the competition. They scored more than 100 points every game and took home the gold. The value of working together is intuitive to most leaders. Capturing the full value of operating as one firm, however, is elusive for most. Those who drive #integration and #standardization from the top down often stifle business-level #innovation, #entrepreneurship, and #clientresponsiveness, which can further create talent attraction and retention issues. Those who emphasize local autonomy, however, often create massive inefficiencies, competing priorities, and inconsistent client service. This often leaves organizations both competitively vulnerable and held hostage to rainmakers, as the client relationship is largely owned individually rather than institutionally. The leaders of most large, global firms have endeavored to achieve the best of both worlds through the creation of a matrixed organization. The idea is to capture economies of scale, scope, and skill while creating strong accountability and ownership by pushing decision making down as close to the customer as possible.
