Man jailed for 15 years for raping 92-year-old granny in Kisumu

A Kisumu court on Friday imprisoned a man for 15 years after finding him guilty of raping a 92-year-old granny in September last year at Ofunyu village.

Winam Law Courts Senior Principal Magistrate Robert Owanda, in his judgement, said witness testimonies during the hearing process proved that the accused - Alex Okumu Ooyi alias Jagor – committed the heinous act.

The accused faced two charges of rape and that of indecent assault contrary to the Sexual Offenses Act.

The court heard that on the material day of September 17, 2023, the accused forcefully broke into the house of granny Keziah Osir at 11pm and raped her.

Magistrate Owanda said a total of seven witnesses testified in the case, including DNA analysis experts from the government chemist who carried out tests on the blood-stained blankets from the scene as well as the accused person’s underwear.

The judge noted that the female DNA profile generated from the granny, including blood stains and vaginal swaps, matched those generated from the accused through DNA analysis, thereby linking him to the act.

In mitigation, the accused asked for leniency from the court arguing that he was a first time offender, but the court declined saying the offence was serious and needed a severe deterrent punishment.

The accused has 14 days to appeal the imprisonment.
