>> Foodtech CEOs - know your place on the food chain before you rebrand << Ambitious foodtech entrepreneurs need to get a grip on reality. Competition in the alternative proteins space is brutal enough without illusions of brandeur. Scaling up production to commercially viable levels, breaking through bioengineering ceilings, delivering the unit cost economics investors are looking for. Despite the billions these companies have raised in recent years, the animal-free, planet-friendly utopia we’ve been promised is still a way off. Brand strategy ought to be the easiest part of the calculus. Yet it’s not, because companies are failing to understand their place in the ecosystem. A case in point: Recently we consulted with a high-growth startup (‘Company X’) specialising in the large-scale manufacture of a non-dairy protein. Wishing to avoid the enormous capex required to manufacture finished goods and distribute them, their model is to partner with multinational food companies developing new lines of cow-free dairy products. They’re not the only alt protein companies thinking this way, and for good reason. However, Company X doesn’t want to be just another (invisible) raw ingredient supplier; they want to become a sought-after premium ingredient brand consumers will seek out.
