Cabinet reshuffle: Need for dedicated ministry to look into digital transformation, says PM

PUTRAJAYA: Challenges in disseminating information as well as to meet the growing demands of digital transformation are reasons why the Communications and Digital Ministry was separated into two entities, explains Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said there was a need to boost communications so that information on the government’s plans and programmes for the people could be explained effectively.

“I am of the view that communication with the media and social media is a challenge.

“The criticisms levelled against us are that while policies are impressive, their impact and the dissemination of information have not been effective or satisfactory.

“So, this must be the focus of the Communications Ministry,” he said after announcing his new Cabinet line-up on Tuesday (Dec 12).

The Prime Minister said there was a need to have a dedicated ministry to look into the digital sector and its transformation as this was a major focus of the unity government.

“The issue of digital is challenging and constantly changing. There are new data centres emerging and the issue of artificial intelligence to be looked into.

“There is also the need to enhance understanding of digital and its issues among students.

“It is a challenging task and I believe this particular issue is daunting. That is why we have the new ministry,” he added.

Fahmi Fadzil remains as Communications Minister while Gobind Singh Deo will helm the new Digital Ministry.
