Paragraph with description of the event (due 14th December)
Pending approval by Igor
Audio-visual artist Igor Jesus reemerges[a] in the contemporary art scene with his upcoming exhibition at Antecâmara in March 2024, marking yet another paradigmatic shift at the nexus of art and technology. The installation, one of five rooms[b][c] embodying the multifaceted project AYNI – Theorems of Reciprocity, revolves around an electronic sculpture that transcends the conventional boundaries of static art, incorporating photography, movement, interactive sound and radio elements. As a testament to the artist’s material inventiveness, the piece pulsates with dynamic sound and visual effects, prompting viewers to engage in a multi-sensory experience that transcends the confines of the gallery room. Remarkably, Igor Jesus showcases his ability to translate visual stimuli into auditory experiences, crafting a synesthetic journey that challenges established perceptions of artistic vision. A unique sensory experience that borrows concepts from the artist’s previous work, this exhibition pushes the boundaries of artistic expression, ways of perception, and spectatorship.
Version 2
Papagiao or Parrots, by Igor Jesus is a multi-media installation, which revolves around an electronic sculpture. The installation, one of five rooms embodying the multifaceted project AYNI – Theorems of Reciprocity, examines the predominance of anthropocentric otologies of perception and proposes, much like his larger body of practice, that art and artistic practice has the means to visibilise the otherwise imperceptible. Departing from traditional static art, this exhibition integrates photography, movement, interactive sound, and radio elements. The piece, in conversation with the physical space of the here and now also pulsates with dynamic sound and visual effects, offering a sensory journey that extends beyond the boundaries of the gallery space. Papagiao builds on Igor Jesus’s previous works, including Poem of Fire (2021), where he blended classical and electronic music together with light and astrological activity. Inspired by the unfinished work of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin (1871–1915), Poem of Fire explored the modelling of sound after the visual, using a NASA database to translate solar pulses into song. By drawing inspiration from previous experiences, Papagiao invites viewers to engage with a living sculpture, a space to meditate, a space of liminality, through a different kind of discourse. The artist’s ability to translate visual stimuli into auditory experiences creates a synesthetic encounter, challenging conventional notions of artistic vision. Given the loyalty to his research-based practice, the installation serves as a natural progression of a kind of exploration that at once pushes the boundaries of expression and audience engagement and also creates new discursive and epistemic material in the field of perception. Lastly, by framing the piece’s multisensory elements within Antecâmara, we imagine Jesus’s narrative to infuse the hollowed spaces of the building’s architecture, while also, due to the space’s exhibitionism-ready windows, extends beyond the confines of the gallery. It would be laborious attempt to define the threshold between inside and outside, of where the skin of the artwork truly ends. Instead, Papagiao serves itself as a translatory and transitory experience with more-than-human phenomenon.

Igor Jesus is a multimedia contemporary artist known for his practice that intersects sound, sculpture and film. His work explores phenomenon that escape or sit outside normative human perception, and finds ways to translate them. A key part of his work – making the invisible visible – are the connections that transcend conceptual and media boundaries, providing space for the experiences that are incommunicable through individual media.
Jesus has a degree in sculpture from the University of Lisbon, and has won multiple awards, such as the Prémio Novos Artistas EDP in 2017 for his artworks, and a first-place award from the ICA (Instituto do Cinema e do Audiovisual) in 2013 for one of his short films. He has presented several individual and collective exhibitions since 2013 throughout Portugal as well as internationally.
_______
Dear Luísa,
I hope this e-mail finds you well! We want to give you an update on how our studio visit with Igor went so that you are in the loop about our newest plans and ideas. I have also included notes from our meeting at Antecâmara today, and some questions for you in yellow.
On Friday the 19th, the group was picked up by Igor at Odivelas Station and went to his big(!) studio/workshop. There we got to see his work in progress, and he (in a very simplified version) illustrated how the art piece, Papagaio, will work. We got to ask many questions, brainstorm, and go into detail about the production, and we had some great clarifications, like the fact that he wants us to do what we want to do - regarding the public program and the opening. Being in the same room encouraged us to come up with new ideas, and I think we all felt that it was such a nice evening and that it made the exhibition more fathomable and exciting.
Papagaio
- He has taken several photos, with a distorted lens, and when these photos return from printing in Germany, we will go together as a group and choose one.
- This photo will be printed in 2 x 2 m and hung from the ceiling at Antecâmara.
- He has recorded sound around Antecâmara.
- After dark, a projector will “dance” around on the picture, and like an LP player’s needle, read the photo.
- This reading will go on to two exciters attached to the windows.
- And through the vibrations of the window, be directed to the amplifier.
- And then come out as sound.
Practical needs
Needs to purchase:
- Exciters x 2
Need to borrow:
- Projector (Igor has a friend who can lend a projector to him, but if that doesn’t work he knows a place where he can rent one - we will get more clarity on this point)
- Amplifier
Need to produce:
- The photo-print (2m x 2m)
Already have:
- Device to hang the photo
If the total amount of the purchases is more than the production budget, Igor will use his fee to cover it.
Ideas
- Bigorna joining us for the picking of the photo and documenting for social media. Also bringing them along on a tour of previous works, and the installation. “The journey to the piece” / “Closing in on Igor” ...
- A tour of Igor’s works around Lisbon, either close to his opening or on the same day.
- Guided tours/workshops with schools around Antecâmara
Questions for you, Luísa:
- Igor might want to change the title, as Papagaio was chosen under time pressure, and he is not feeling that it relates that well to the work. If we push him to come up with a new name ASAP, is it still time to get it in the print?
- When is the opening at Católica? We might be able to connect this to the guided tour/Bigorna or in another way.
Best regards from the group!

We would like to invite you to the fifth installation of Ayni: Theorems of Reciprocity, the multi-media installation Time Machine (2023), by Igor Jesus. This installation integrates photography, movement, interactive sound, and radio elements and will premiere at Galeria Antecâmara, on the 28th of March 2024, from 6 p.m. Join us as we watch Time Machine transition from day to night.
Presented at Antecamara starting on the 28th March to 4th May 2024, Igor’s Time Machine explores philosophical perspectives that give priority to human-centric views of reality. Consistent with Igor practice, the exhibition highlights that creativity and artistic expression have the special power to make visible what is invisible. The work, in conversation with the physical space of the here and now, also pulsates with dynamic sound and visual effects, offering a sensory journey that extends beyond the boundaries of the gallery space.
Time Machine builds on Igor Jesus’s previous works, including Poem of Fire (2021), where he blended classical and electronic music together with light and astrological activity. Inspired by the unfinished work of Russian composer Alexander Scriabin (1871–1915), Poem of Fire explored the modeling of sound after the visual, using a NASA database to translate solar pulses into song. Lastly, by framing the piece’s multisensory elements within Galeria Antecâmara, one can imagine Jesus’s narrative infusing the hollowed spaces of the building’s architecture, while also, due to the space’s exhibitionism-ready windows, extending beyond the confines of the gallery.
Igor Jesus lives and works in Lisbon and has a degree in Sculpture from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Lisbon. In 2013, he won the first prize in the ICA (Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual) competition for the making of short films. Igor most recent group exhibitions include: HangarOut – EntreLinhas, Palácio Marquês de Abrantes (2017), 2016 Artists' Film International (at MAAT, Lisbon, Whitechapel Gallery, London, Istanbul Modern, Turkey, GAMeC – Galleria d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Bergamo, Italy, and Projecto 88, Mumbai, India)
Curated by PhD and MA Students in Culture Studies at The Lisbon Consortium, Universidade Católica Portuguesa: Teresa Weinholtz, Aishwarya Kumar, Rosalind Murphy, Ida Svee and Joana Nóbrega. In the framework of the seminar in Curatorial Practices, coordinated by Luísa Santos. Support: República Portuguesa - Cultura | DGARTES – Direção-Geral das Artes.

[a]I don't think reemerge is the right word here as he wasn't lost from prominence at any point. But I don't know if you want to just change the word or reframe the sentence.
[b]Is this the word used by Luisa, because otherwise it gives a spacial visual which may not be correct. So maybe pieces/ works/projects?
[c]Yes, Luísa said that we're doing "project rooms"
