Story
I am running the London Marathon for my role model, my Grandma Sally. As a perfectly fit and healthy 49 year old she was diagnosed as a type 1 brittle diabetic, but I am so proud to say she had her 90th birthday in March 2023. Growing up, I couldn't wish for a better grandma, she taught me values of kindness and honesty that will stay with me for life. Her relationship with her husband Steve is the kind of relationship I aspire to have in my life, they adored one another, they were truly soul mates who only ever loved and cared for each-other. Sadly, Steve passed away in 2017, my grandma was heartbroken and due to the shock her diabetes was highly unstable, we almost lost her. My family in rural Dorset and Grandma Sally in Kent, both subsequently sold our houses and moved in together in Bournemouth so we could care for her. She is a truly remarkable woman, despite breaking both her hips and having a turbulent first few years in stabilising her blood sugars; due to her being a brittle diabetic, she got to celebrate her 90th birthday (the oldest of any of her 6 siblings, despite her being given the least chance). She is my role model because despite all this adversity of breaking both her hips; having to permanently live downstairs now, and her sometimes out of control brittle diabetes, she's never lets it get her down and still always makes others feel so loved and appreciated in her presence. This is shown as my 20 something year old friends adore her, my parents friends visit us to solely spend time with her and her friends from Kent still come to visit her every 6 months despite her not being able to reciprocate the visit, as she is housebound. She is the most loving, caring, yet ever youthful 90 year old you will ever meet. I would love nothing more for her to see me challenge myself and entirely dedicate myself to one thing to show her how much she means to me, and that is why I want to run the London Marathon in her name.
