S2 Incentivized Testnet (Phase 1): Info & Guide for Insiders

Side Protocol
5 min readMay 9, 2024

We’re excited to announce the launch of Side Protocol’s first incentivized testnet! Prior to the commencement of S2, we received 3666 applications from individuals and institutions eager to become node operator partners. After careful consideration, we’ve selected 100 experienced operators to join us. Those who have been selected are now assigned the “Validator” role on our Discord server.

Phase 1 will introduce a Bitcoin sidechain featuring Bitcoin address support, Bitcoin Connect, and a native DEX. Following this phase, we’ll be adding more core features in line with our roadmap.

This guide is specifically designed for S2 Phase 1, where participants can earn a portion of our genesis token supply during the Token Generation Event (TGE). To qualify for the potential rewards, make sure to register on our Insider Point System. It’s not just a way to track your engagement — you’ll also earn points as rewards!

Preparation

0. Install Wallet

  • We recommend using the OKX Wallet or Bitcoin wallets such as Unisat. Download it here. In this guide, we’ll be using the OKX Wallet.

1. Become an Insider

  • To join the S2 incentivized testnet, we suggest becoming an Insider within the Side community first. Achieve Insider status by completing social quests on our Galxe campaign.
  • After becoming an Insider, you can now log in the Insider Point System to track your engagement. If you’re unable to secure the role, you can also use someone else’s invitation code to gain access.

2. Switch to Native Segwit address for enhanced user experience

  • Visit Side Station, connect your OKX Wallet, and switch your Side Chain address to Native SegWit, which starts with the prefix ‘bc1q.

After completing all the preparations mentioned above, you’re all set and ready to start earning keys. These keys can then be exchanged for boxes. By unlocking these boxes, you can earn SIDE Points. Make sure to complete the quests listed at the end of this blog.

What to do with Keys?

Once you’ve accumulated enough keys, you have several options:

  1. Get a Box immediately
  2. Save your keys to unlock higher-tier boxes as you progress to higher levels
  3. Try your luck with a blind box to potentially unlock higher-tier boxes!

How to acquire more Keys?

To acquire more keys, apart from completing quests, you can also invite others to join. The more people you invite, the more keys you’ll receive. By using an invitation code, both the inviter and the invited user who has completed at least one quest will receive an extra reward of 50 keys. However, remember that you still need to level up to unlock higher-tier boxes.

Moreover, you can earn additional keys by providing valuable feedback. Fill out the form [here] to submit your feedback. Depending on the quality of your input, you may receive a significant number of keys from us! Note that some features, such as bridging, are temporarily disabled on purpose. Useful feedback may include, but is not limited to:

  • Bug reports (e.g., amount inconsistency)
  • Suggestions for product improvement (e.g., UI/UX)
  • Identifying security vulnerabilities

Quests

1. Faucet

  • Enter your address on the Faucet page to receive 5 $SIDE testnet tokens. Your $SIDE balance will be visible in the wallet.
  • Alternatively, if the web faucet is inaccessible, you can access our Discord faucet channel. Please note that Insider status is required.

2. Swap

  • On the Swap page, you can exchange $SIDE for $BTCT or other assets.

3. Add Liquidity

  • Locate the liquidity pool (in this example, $BTCT/SIDE) and add liquidity using $BTCT and $SIDE tokens in your Side Chain account. Upon adding liquidity, you will receive BTCT-SIDE-CP-LP tokens in your wallet.

4. Stake Liquidity

  • Before claiming liquidity rewards, you must ‘stake’ your liquidity by locking LP tokens.
  • Expand the ‘Manage’ button in the pool page and select ‘Stake’.
  • Stake a portion of your LP tokens to become eligible for incentives provided to this pool.

5. Claim Rewards

  • Rewards from incentives are emitted every second. You can claim rewards after staking liquidity.

6. Withdraw liquidity

  • Locate your liquidity pool (in this example $BTCT/$SIDE) and withdraw some liquidity from it. After withdrawal, exchange SIDE-BTCT-CP-LP tokens to receive $BTCT and $SIDE in your wallet.

7. Submit Limit Order

  • On the Swap page, switch to ‘Limit’ mode, and try out the limit order feature by submitting a limit order. Please note that there are additional fees associated with creating a limit order, so ensure you have sufficient funds in your wallet.

8. Delegate

  • Delegate SIDE tokens to one of the active validators.

9. Undelegate

  • Undelegate your tokens from the previously selected validator.

10. Vote a governance proposal

  • Select a governance proposal and cast your vote.

Notes:

  • Holding SIDE Points does not guarantee rewards in token airdrops. We anticipate sybil activities during this stage. To ensure fair token distribution, strict eligibility rules will be enforced.
  • The total token supply allocated to this S2 testnet is yet to be determined, and the duration of the testnet remains uncertain. Please join the S2 testnet only after carefully considering the time and resources required.

Please stay tuned for our future announcements regarding additional feature integrations and product updates!
