What is a primary election?

A primary election is where parties decide who to nominate as their candidate in the general election, which takes place in November.

Pennsylvania is a “closed primary” state. In order to vote in the primary election, voters must be registered with a political party (and can only vote for candidates running on their chosen party).

Unaffiliated or independent voters are not able to participate in the primary.

Any U.S. Citizens, at least 18 years old, that have resided in Pennsylvania and their county of residency for at least 30 days before the election are eligible to vote as long as they are not currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction. (In Pennsylvania, rights are restored immediately upon release).

Spread the word

Did you know that millions of Americans can’t access the democratic process because of solvable problems in how elections are run? These problems aren’t felt equally across communities – voters of color are 6x more likely than White voters to wait longer than an hour to vote, even in the same town. Spread the word to help defeat barriers to the ballot box.
