STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Tottenville High School’s aviation teacher Zachary Rosch has won the FLAG Award for Teaching Excellence.
In addition to receiving a formal proclamation, Rosch received $25,000. And Tottenville High school also was awarded $10,000 from the FLAG Organization.
This is the second year in a row that Tottenville took honors for the entire borough, according to PTA President Suzanne Lutz.
The FLAG Award for Teaching Excellence recognizes and celebrates extraordinary public school teachers who inspire learning through creativity, passion, and commitment.
The process begins with an independent jury which selects the finalists from those nominated based on numerous factors, with a strong emphasis placed on the student experience.
“Last year music teacher Laurie D’Amico took honors,” Lutz said. “And Sandra Fam, a current student of Mr. Rosch, nominated him for the award.”
Lutz went on to explain there’s only one winner from each borough.
“I was absolutely honored to be recognized for the award,” Rosch said.
“It brings an incredible amount of happiness to see my students enjoying themselves, working on things that wouldn’t have been possible. We are a family here and to see our projects, as outlandish as they are, come to fruition is an honor to be a part of. Here at Tottenville, every student has a path and our path is filled with big ideas and support from administration, donations and the students.”
