So just recently I got back into SimCity, and knowing much more than when I last played it, in 2015, I can tell that there are major bugs that affect gameplay quite a bit. I don't know if there is work on a big community patch making the game more playable, as it currently is really frustrating if you want to build a successful city/region.

These are issues that occured to me while playing the last 5 days:

  • I built the arcology and only about 10% of the promised workers and customers are actually commuting
  • Citizens are abandoning their houses because they need a job, when in their whealth therer are about 1,000 free jobs
  • Continuous sound of planes flying by, wich can be annoying
  • Trams getting stuck on the street
  • Students not attending the universty, when the traffic is low and there are bus stops everywhere
  • Resources not being delivered to the great work, when applying for it
  • Techleven not increasing even when the university is placed directly next to it

Just these bugs make the game really hard to love, so I hope that there are modders out ther interested in working on a fix.

Quite frankly, Simcity 2013 is all but abandoned due to all those bugs and limitations. Indeed, if you check the STEX section for that game, almost all developing and releasing of mods stalled around end-2015. This is not to say that there is no way to mod or improve the game, but if you are looking for a critical mass of modders to get some breakthrough soon, I think that's hard.

Now, on Sim City 4, on the other hand...

That doesn't sound good. I'm not even looking to mod the game, I just want those bugs fixed. If the simulation would actually work as intended, it would be all right...

Well that's really the problem, EA/Maxis didn't do a great job with SimCity (2013). I suspect most of the time they did spend after release was sorting out the mess of online play and then removing it as a requirement. Some other show-stoppers were fixed too, but I'd totally agree that far too many serious bugs, that ruin gameplay remain. Even if you can live with the lack of larger cities/maps, there is so much wrong that it's really hard to find an enjoyable experience playing.

As a result, there is no community left to look at fixing anything. Maxis really didn't have great modding support either, so who knows how easily such things could have been fixed. Long and short, I wouldn't hold my breath waiting. Most likely this game will just fade to obscurity. That's actually a shame though, there were plenty of ideas that were great and there is a lot of potential there.

Change the look and feel of your transit networks, with the minimum of effort, for example customised versions of my Sidewalk NAM (SWN) and Terrain Grass NAM (TGN) mods, and much more besides.
