Tony Mowbray is recovering well and ‘getting stronger’ according to Birmingham City interim Mark Venus.

Mowbray temporarily stepped down from his duties last week after a medical diagnosis, leaving his assistant Venus to take charge of Blues for an estimated period of ‘six to eight weeks’. Blues lost their first game without Mowbray to Ipswich Town last weekend and face Southampton on Saturday.

Venus has been in constant communication with Mowbray this week and offered an update on the 60-year-old at his press conference on Thursday afternoon.

“I have had a chat with him every day to be honest,” said Venus. “A little update… he’s had his surgery and everything’s fine. He’s getting stronger, so he is on the way back hopefully. I’m not saying immediately but it’s been nice hearing him and chatting to him. It’s given us a bit of confidence.”

Blues were dragged back into the relegation conversation last weekend after results went against them. Six of the teams around Blues in the Championship table recorded victories to put additional pressure on the Southampton clash.

On the eve of their 34th Championship match of the season, the Blues players were boosted by a message from Mowbray. “I gave the lads a little update from him this morning,” Venus added.

“They all asked, they kept asking. We are keeping everyone up to date with it. He’s getting stronger.”
