PUTRAJAYA: Cabinet has approved the proposed amendments to citizenship laws, says Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

Saifuddin said he had briefed the Cabinet on the matter and would request that the amendment be included in the House proceedings this year.

“The ministry will continue to engage stakeholders regarding the amendment.

“We have held several sessions, including with PKR MPs, Perikatan Nasional MPs, party whips, and chairpersons of the parliamentary select committees on human rights and women and children.

“Next will be meeting the media, distinguished individuals and civil societies to explain what the amendment entails,” he told a press conference on Friday (March 8).

The proposed amendments would require proof that an infant was born in Malaysia before its citizenship application can be submitted.

Last month, Saifuddin said the proposed amendments would be deliberated on by the Cabinet on Friday (March 8).
