Posthumous Bharat Ratna Honors: Remembering 4 Distinguished Personalities, with LK Advani to be Awarded on March 31st

President Draupadi Murmu awarded four individuals posthumously with the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in the country. The recipients were former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh and P.V. Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, and agricultural scientist Dr. MS Swaminathan.

Senior BJP leader Lal Krishna Advani is set to receive the Bharat Ratna on March 31. President Draupadi Murmu will personally visit Advani’s residence to present him with the award on Sunday, as he was unable to attend the ceremony today due to health reasons. Prime Minister Modi, Home Minister Shah, and BJP President JP Nadda will also be in attendance at Advani’s home.

The families of the four honorees accepted the awards on their behalf during a special ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. PV Prabhakar Rao, Jayant Choudhary, Ramnath Thakur, and Nitya Rao received the honors on behalf of their respective family members.

This year, the government announced the Bharat Ratna for a total of five individuals. Including the recipients from previous years, such as Madan Mohan Malviya, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Pranab Mukherjee, Bhupen Hazarika, and Nanaji Deshmukh, the total number of individuals who have been honored with the Bharat Ratna has now reached 53.

PV Narasimha Rao

Narasimha Rao served as the country’s 9th Prime Minister. During the announcement of the Bharat Ratna award bestowed upon him, PM Modi expressed that Narasimha Rao Garu’s term as Prime Minister was characterized by significant initiatives that facilitated India’s integration into the global markets, consequently ushering in a fresh era of economic progress.

Chaudhary Charan Singh

Charan Singh served as the Prime Minister of India and also held the position of Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. On February 9, PM Modi announced the prestigious Bharat Ratna award for him, stating that it is a great privilege for our government to honor former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh with this recognition. This award is a tribute to his unparalleled dedication and immense contribution to the nation. Throughout his life, he selflessly devoted himself to championing the rights and welfare of farmers.

Karpoori Thakur

President Murmu declared the Bharat Ratna award for Karpoori Thakur on January 23, one day prior to his 100th birthday celebration. Karpoori Thakur served as the Chief Minister of Bihar on two occasions and as Deputy CM once. He was recognized for his dedication to the welfare of the backward classes.

On February 9, Prime Minister Modi declared that Bharat Ratna (posthumously) would be awarded to Dr. MS Swaminathan, PV Narasimha Rao, and Chaudhary Charan Singh. Dr. Swaminathan, an agricultural scientist, is renowned as the pioneer of the ‘Green Revolution’ in India.
