Items Forum For Disability Accessibility Suggestions!

Terrarian
Welcome! I made this thread ages ago with absolutely no idea how much involvement it would get. Thank you to everyone who has contributed and those who continue to contribute. Thank you developers for taking this seriously! Please note that I am still updating the Accessibility Suggestions paper (here). I will always update the paper even after 1.4.5 comes out (if I die I'll get my brother to do it lol), so please continue to make suggestions. Also don't be afraid to suggest things here that you're not 100% sure are accessibility related. This is a safe and welcoming community and either you were right and will be added to the paper, or someone will kindly help with or create a separate game suggestion thread.

Original Post:
Since the stress ball is accidentally an accessibility feature, could you make explicit accessibility items like a mount that automatically traverses terrain? I'm thinking of something mechanical that cannot jump but climbs up walls and maybe grapples across the holes in the corruption. Or possibly access to knockback accessories earlier on/ an option to turn knockback off in Journey mode without having to use God mode for straight-up invincibility so that people who struggle with platforming can build out their space as needed without the constant movement from enemy damage.

I want to clarify that weapon automation is a godsend for people with joint/ mobility issues. Here is an example of a thread from last year talking about this: Game Mechanics - Autoswing for accessibility reasons?. I suffer from chronic fatigue and brain fog at times where I can no longer play at all; I don't think it's possible to accommodate those things, but I want to see what we can come up with together to make the game more accessible in other areas!

I came across this thread that I want to bring renewed attention to for awareness: NPCs & Enemies - Recommendation: Change the name of "Spazmatism"
Another thread I found that is related to accessibility: Sprites - Arachnophobia Accessibility options.
A painting of or related to the disability pride flag would be so cool as a small form of inclusion and recognition <3
Or just put in an inhaler that gives buffs so I get to be cool in my favorite game when I can't be in real life ahahaha

I just wanted to start this channel of communication so more fellow disabled gamers can fall in love with my favorite game!! Please give ideas here, or be inspired to make your own forum! Accessibility is so important, and you would be surprised at how many accessibility features double as quality-of-life improvements and vice versa, so these things benefit everyone!

I have also done a comprehensive analysis on accessibility in Terraria with detailed suggestions here.

New Stuff:
I made a disability pride flag and piano :)

In the Works: A video on the accessibility suggestions paper. Though I keep having to update the script as I continue to receive amazing suggestions haha!

i made a thread on my suggestions relating to visual impairment a while back, should i put the link here?
Yes! I intend for this to be a master thread for easy reference. I will also look at your suggestions and add them to my paper (and credit you of course) if I missed anything major in my research!

I shall also add mine to the mix about having a slider to enlarge the mouse pointer.

Thanks for adding this in! I have also inputted the suggestion into the accessibility suggestions paper and credited you and linked to your post accordingly :)

some of these are no-brainers tbh, i like the ideas
changing spazmatism to spasmatism clears up the issue there pretty easily i think, otherwise i don't think they're going to make any major changes to the boss's name

is there a subtitle mode for the game like minecraft? if not there should be, where all important sounds are signified some other way

Dunno if this is still being updated but it inspired me to do a bit of homework on settings and accessibility in terraria and Minecraft (bc that’s also a really good game) even though I don’t have a disability irl and came up with some more ideas:

~ There should be a autojump setting for users with low manual dexterity or motor skill issues (or just on a mobile phone touchscreen) where you don’t have to jump as much and whenever there is a mob (or projectile like a rolling boulder) or you’re climbing a steep 3 block slope or something the game does the jumping for you so you don’t get snagged on terrain.

-A robotic voiceover ( similar to Minecraft’s narrator) that describes what is going on to the player such as if the player is hovering over an option to play game on the menu ui the voiceover would say “ play game” or if you were in a terraria world and someone sent a message in chat the voiceover could say something like “ mrhornbill says can you come to my base so I can trade” for example. This could be helpful for people with reading difficulties and they just want a robot to speak into their ear holes.

-Ability to toggle a slight delay in chat and game messages for people with reading disabilities so they can fully take in what happening.

-for people with sight disabilities you could be able to reduce transparency of text

-there could be an option for people who are jittery or faint hearted that basically stops jumpscares such as if you enter the dungeon pre-skeletron instead of being instant crushed from a flying skull the the screen could have a FOV effect where it starts shaking slightly and zooms towards the dungeon guardian slowly approaching and getting faster and give the player the option to escape unharmed if they press a certain button and then the would know that the dungeon preskeletron is not safe.
Or if the player has never killed the wall of flesh before and they are in the underworld and let’s say a voodoo doll drops into the lava on accident while they were building a platform instead of spawning in the wall of flesh to come and absolutely stampede over the player out of nowhere and if you try escape you instantly die there would be a FOV effect where the screen shakes slightly and slides over the wall of flesh slowly speeding up and give the player an option to teleport to safety unharmed by pressing a button for about 10 secs.

That’s all I hope you like my ideas.
