In Conversation: 'Bel-Air' EP Anthony Sparks
Our third event in a series of mixers, held Oct. 5 at the Aster hotel in Hollywood, featured a conversation between Variety reporter Selome Hailu and Anthony Sparks, executive producer/writer of Bel-Air (Peacock). Producer-writer Eric Haywood, a member of the WGA negotiating committee, discussed the strike settlement. Read more

It's All Over but the Screaming
We received 62 entries for our short-film horror contest "Plastic Kills," co-sponsored by Plastic Pollution Coalition, but only one took home the $2,000 grand prize: Blastic, written, produced and directed by Adam Wademan, who also stars as Dracula. The three-minute short co-stars Aaron Beal as the bloodsucker's faithful assistant, and was photographed and edited by Karola Sanchez. Watch

The Future of Medicine
As co-sponsor of the Infinity Festival, we presented a panel on “The Future of Medicine: How Hollywood Can Help Save Lives. Kate Folb, HH&S program director; Albert "Skip" Rizzo, director for Medical Virtual Reality at USC Davis School of Gerontology; and Dr. Brandy Hattendorf, clinical associate professor of pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine of USC, were among the speakers. The End of Life as a Part of Life
HH&S took part in the End Well symposium Nov. 16 at the Skirball Cultural Center, where the featured guest speakers included Yvette Nicole Brown, Tig Notaro, J.J. Duncan (The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning), and Tembi Locke (From Scratch). It was part of End Well's efforts to shift the narratives about end-of-life care. Read more

'Trauma That Has Not Been Addressed'
The drivers of the mental health crisis for Black children begin early and persist through a lifetime. About 53% of Black youth experience moderate to severe symptoms of depression, and about 20% said they were exposed to racial trauma often or very often in ife. These disparities and lived experiences have systemic roots, including discrimination in housing, education and health care. Read more

The Legacy of Racist Mortgage Practices
A study by the University of Iowa cites the specific racist structure of residential “redlining,” a method the federal government once used to guide banks away from approving home loans to minorities. The residual effects of that 1930s program are still being felt with “poor health and higher mortality rates.” Read more
